Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Laboratory Supervisor to join our team at Christus Health. As a Laboratory Supervisor, you will be responsible for coordinating and managing the day-to-day operations of our laboratory, ensuring that all personnel are held accountable for their performance, and assisting in the orientation and development of personnel competencies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day supervision of high, moderate, and waived complexity test performance by laboratory testing personnel.
  • Ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, and standards as promulgated by state and federal agencies, the hospital, and other regulatory entities.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate the work activities of assigned section(s) and shift(s).
  • Keep accurate attendance records on all associates and maintain time and attendance records for the department.
  • Assist the Director/Manager in maintaining the Laboratory budget and performing monthly analysis and variance reporting on expense detail.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain current procedural manuals of all tests performed in the section(s) assigned and update and review manuals biennially or more often as necessary.
  • Enforce all safety policies and procedures.
  • Research, evaluate, and implement new and improved procedures, methodologies, instrumentation, and techniques as assigned by the Director/Manager or Supervisor.
  • Implement an appropriate section and/or shift-specific Quality Control Program and maintain all applicable Quality Control and Functional Verification records.
  • Monitor test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
  • Refer clinical problems to the laboratory director, manager, or supervisor as appropriate.
  • Assure that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot all equipment in assigned section(s) to keep in good working order.
  • Prepare and submit routine or special administrative and technical reports by due dates as required, requested, or delegated.
  • Order and maintain inventories for all necessary supplies and reagents in assigned section(s) to always have an adequate amount on hand.
  • Train new technologists and technicians in the assigned section(s) procedures and policies and provide subsequent training in all new or revised procedures and techniques for assigned shift(s) or provide remedial training as necessary.
  • Assist the Director/Manager in designing, implementing, collecting, and analyzing data, and reporting all phases of a comprehensive performance improvement program that involves laboratory personnel in Performance Improvement activities.
  • Prepare and conduct in-service education either formally or informally for assigned section(s) and shift(s).
  • Provide input on personnel for hire, fire, transfer, interview, disciplinary probation, etc; counsel and document technical deficiencies.
  • Perform skills review and competency assessments and maintain appropriate documentation on all technical personnel as delegated by the Laboratory Manager/Director.
  • Oversee and enforce expectations of personnel in assigned section(s).
  • Participate in proficiency testing surveys; review and evaluate results and maintain copies of survey records in section(s).
  • Coordinate and attend meetings as required to discuss changes and developments regarding policies, equipment, procedures, staffing, etc.
  • Utilize and have a thorough working knowledge of the Laboratory Information System and applications thereof.
  • Demonstrate competence to perform assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets the population-specific and developmental needs of patients served by the department.
  • Appropriately adapt assigned patient assessment, treatment, and/or care methods to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age-specific, and other developmental needs of each patient served.
  • Process patient specimens, including collection, handling, and distribution always cognizant of minimal pediatric specimen volumes (when required).
  • Perform all routine and complicated laboratory procedures in the primary section to which assigned about age (pedi) or sex-specific values.
  • Provide notification and documentation of critical laboratory values obtained.
  • Calculate, enter, and/or verify results of laboratory procedures.
  • Perform all duties in a manner that protects the confidentiality of patients and does not solicit or disclose any confidential information unless it is necessary for the performance of assigned job duties.
  • Keep abreast of Medical Technology, by reading Journals, texts, and technical bulletins; attend workshops and seminars; become active in local professional associations.
