To achieve this goal, the Institute for a Sustainable Earth (ISE) at George Mason University has been awarded a $6 million cooperative agreement from the National Science Foundation's Accelerating Research Translation (ART) program.

About the Position

The Community Engagement Specialist, Accelerating Research Translation, will play a critical role in facilitating the translation of research into practice to create climate-ready communities throughout Virginia. This position will work closely with the ART leadership team and the ISE Associate Director for Strategic Engagement to develop and maintain relationships with climate and resilience stakeholders from local governments, regional planning commissions, community-based organizations, and businesses across Virginia.

Responsibilities
  1. Serve as a point of contact for stakeholders interested in engaging in the ART programs and direct them to other ISE and VCC programs when needed.
  2. Develop and maintain preliminary community profiles to inform future outreach and identify strategic opportunities for external engagement.
  3. Foster partnerships with faculty and partners, including the Center for Climate Strategies, to identify and recruit stakeholders for discovery interviews and secure stakeholder clients for participation in the STRP courses.
  4. Support the co-design of experiential-learning activities, such as internships and capstone projects, for student participants with external partners.
  5. Develop an understanding of ISE, VCC, and ART-affiliated faculty and postdocs' research and teaching interests and support their engagement with external stakeholders participating in the ART programs.
Required Qualifications
  1. Master's degree in a related field.
  2. Demonstrated relevant experience in community engagement and/or partnership development.
  3. Broad knowledge of climate or sustainability science and its role in policy and practice.
  4. Outstanding interpersonal skills or social intelligence.
  5. Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication.
  6. Highly effective collaborator and team member.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Considerable relevant experience in community engagement and/or partnership development.
  2. Experience working with climate and resilience stakeholders in Virginia.
  3. Experience working to put research into action through public policy engagement and/or in commercial ecosystems.
  4. Experience in a large, dispersed university environment.
  5. Strong project management skills with experience managing multiple, simultaneous work streams.
  6. Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  7. Demonstrates adaptability and resilience to change and complexity.
  8. Ability to effectively coordinate and communicate with faculty, staff, administrators, sponsors, and stakeholders across multiple disciplines.
  9. An understanding of policy and/or research translation processes.
  10. A strategic and creative innovator.
