Overview
The Practical Nursing Specialist operates under the guidance of the Physician, Nurse Supervisor, and/or Practice/Office Manager. This role is pivotal in identifying patient needs and symptoms proactively. Responsibilities include preparing patients for examinations, assisting during procedures, coordinating diagnostic tests and follow-up care, and meticulously documenting treatments in medical records. The Specialist also plays a crucial role in educating patients and their families. Competency in caring for diverse patient populations, including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics, is essential. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

All Practical Nursing Specialists are expected to be licensed, knowledgeable, and adhere to the standards of nursing practice as defined by the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act, while implementing the Nursing Practice Standards and Code established by the National Federation of Licensed Practical Nurses, Inc. (NFLPN). As integral members of the patient services team, they are expected to uphold patient advocacy, adhere to system policies and procedures, and support service excellence objectives.

  • Operate within the scope of practice in accordance with Nursing Practice Standards and Code established by the NFLPN.
  • Promote health through clinical care utilizing evidence-based practices, applying analytical and critical thinking to ensure individualized care, and fostering effective partnerships for optimal patient outcomes.
  • Utilize current clinical practice standards in daily operations.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration
  • Coordinate the delivery and documentation of safe, high-quality patient care that aligns with the professional care delivery model. This includes diverse interdisciplinary communication methods, timely documentation, and fostering a respectful, inclusive clinical environment.
  • Exhibit teamwork and collaboration by practicing in a fiscally responsible manner that encourages the recruitment and retention of healthcare team members.
  • Professional Development and Initiative
  • Complete all initial and ongoing professional competency assessments, mandatory education, and licensure requirements.
  • Serve as a preceptor and/or mentor for other practical nurses and unlicensed staff to ensure a qualified workforce and promote a healthy work environment.
  • Delegate tasks to unlicensed staff as appropriate and within the scope of practice.
  • Evidence-Based Practice and Research
  • Encourage evidence-based practice, nursing research, and performance improvement initiatives. Participate in shared decision-making groups and committees as feasible.
  • Adhere to all healthcare system policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards.
  • Engage in data collection and formulate relevant clinical questions to advance evidence-based practice.
  • Practice Operations
  • Deliver direct patient care as directed by the provider.
  • Proactively plan for patient care across the continuum through pre-visit planning processes.
  • Contribute to financial viability through quality service and clinical excellence.
  • May act as a liaison with nursing leadership regarding clinical operations and quality initiatives.
  • Patient Liaison and Advocate
  • Provide relationship-centered patient care that is consistent with population-specific characteristics in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Collaborate with patients, significant others, and/or family members to create a comfortable and safe environment for care delivery, ensuring that patient goals are central to the care plan.

Qualifications

Required Minimum Education
  • Graduate from a practical or vocational nursing program.
Required Minimum Experience
  • Previous healthcare experience preferred.
  • Experience in an ambulatory or outpatient setting preferred.
  • Hospital-based experience may substitute in some cases.
  • Specific experience in practice specialty required.
Required Minimum Skills
  • Organizational skills and efficient time management to ensure patient comfort and satisfaction.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact positively with staff, providers, and patients.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written English, optimize technology for clinical care, and possess basic computer skills.
  • Adherence to the WellStar Credo and Code of Conduct.
Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s)
  • Licensed Practical Nurse required.
  • Basic Life Support certification required.
  • BLS Instructor certification required.
  • BLS Provisional certification required.

Additional Licenses and Certifications

  • Current/active license as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Georgia.
  • Must possess a current BLS card from the American Heart Association prior to hire.
  • ACLS/PALS certification may be required in certain practice areas.
