Position Overview

The Practical Nurse is an essential contributor to a collaborative team of licensed and unlicensed caregivers dedicated to delivering personalized, high-quality, and safe patient care. This role operates within a clinical setting overseen by Nurse Managers and other leaders, functioning under the guidance of registered nurses through the WellStar Shared Leadership Model. The practice framework is guided by the WellStar Professional Practice Model, emphasizing shared leadership, teamwork, exemplary practice, innovative solutions, and ongoing professional growth. LPN competencies are aligned with this model and supported by the WellStar Core Competencies.

All Practical Nurses are expected to be licensed, knowledgeable, and adhere to the nursing practice standards as established by the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act, implementing the Scope of Practice and Code of Ethics Standards outlined by the Georgia Board of Nursing and the American Nurses Association. As a vital member of the patient services team, the individual is expected to advocate for the patient’s voice while adhering to system policies and procedures and supporting service excellence objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Essential Functions and Core Responsibilities
  • Exemplary Practice
  • Engages in data collection for patient assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of healthcare service delivery, performing specialized tasks as appropriately educated under the supervision of the Registered Nurse.
  • Delivers relationship-centered, patient-focused care in partnership with the registered nurse, ensuring alignment with population-specific characteristics (e.g., age, gender, health conditions) and demonstrating cultural sensitivity.
  • Actively collaborates with patients and their significant others (as appropriate) through suitable communication methods (e.g., bedside shift reports; interdisciplinary rounds), keeping them informed and involved in the care planning process.
  • Practices in accordance with current clinical standards under the supervision of the RN.
  • Implements comfort and safety measures, assisting patients with daily living activities.
  • Administers treatments and medications through various routes.
  • Team Collaboration
  • Contributes to the delivery and documentation of safe, quality patient care under the supervision of the registered nurse, promoting a professional care delivery model. This includes diverse interdisciplinary communication methods (interdisciplinary rounds, case reviews, etc.), timely documentation, and fostering a respectful, inclusive clinical environment.
  • Exhibits teamwork and collaboration by practicing in a fiscally responsible manner and supporting the recruitment and retention of healthcare team members.
  • Alerts the registered nurse to any changes in the patient’s condition as necessary.
  • Innovative Practices
  • Advocates for evidence-based practice, nursing research, and performance improvement initiatives. Participates in activities such as value analysis to inform decision-making regarding patient care products.
  • Engages in data collection, formulates relevant clinical inquiries for advanced evidence-based practice, consults with experts, and utilizes appropriate resources to address practice questions.
  • Participates in implementing new practice changes under the supervision of the registered nurse, collaborating with care managers and other healthcare team members to achieve optimal practice outcomes (e.g., reduced readmission rates, minimized avoidable days, decreased adverse events).
  • Professional Growth
  • Completes all initial and ongoing competency assessments, mandatory education, and population-specific training.
  • Serves as a preceptor and/or mentor for fellow licensed practical nurses.
  • Shared Leadership
  • Adheres to all healthcare system/organizational policies and procedures, as well as clinical competencies outlined in this job description and professional standards, ensuring compliance with legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements.
  • Participates in and supports performance improvement initiatives involving all stakeholders, promoting safe, quality patient care through active involvement in research and research utilization, as well as supporting shared leadership at all levels within the system.
  • Additional Responsibilities

  • Complies with all WellStar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
  • Qualifications

Required Minimum Education
  • Graduate of an accredited/approved school of practical/vocational nursing.
  • Required Minimum Experience

Required Minimum Skills
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking the English language, with basic computer skills and the ability to leverage technology to enhance clinical care.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, along with a commitment to customer service.
  • Able to function effectively in a fast-paced environment and respond to emergencies with decisiveness, composure, and respect.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Practices nursing based on evidence and analytical skills, demonstrating strong critical thinking abilities.
  • Compliance with the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Professional Nurses is mandatory.
  • Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s)

  • Basic Life Support certification.
  • BLS - Instructor certification.
  • BLS - Provisional certification.
  • Licensed Practical Nurse certification.
