Position Overview

82nd Street Academics is seeking dedicated part-time Instructors for our after-school initiative. This program caters to approximately 170 students in grades 5 through 10. Our commitment to students is to "equip leaders with the tools to succeed." The primary objective of our initiative is to deliver the academic and social support necessary for students to cultivate the skills essential for their secondary and collegiate education.

We achieve these objectives through a comprehensive program that encompasses homework assistance, arts, dance, culinary skills, and activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), along with fitness, leadership development, goal-setting, and college exploration. This initiative is supported by the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and operates in close collaboration with the host school.

Work Schedule: The hours for this role are Mondays to Fridays from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM. Additional bi-weekly meetings and professional development sessions may take place outside of these hours.

Compensation: The pay rate is $19.00 per hour, commensurate with prior experience and relevant education.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide daily leadership for a class of 10-15 middle school students, ensuring student engagement and retention, whether instruction is delivered remotely or in-person.
  • Develop lesson plans ahead of time, ensuring they are age-appropriate and aligned with the program's goals and stakeholder expectations. Planning will focus on college exploration, STEM, and social-emotional learning activities.
  • Follow all protocols to deliver effective remote and/or in-person instruction, ensuring a safe environment for all participants. Cleaning of student materials at the beginning and end of your shift is mandatory.
  • Serve as a role model for students, demonstrating exemplary adherence to policies regarding attendance, punctuality, dress code, and respectful interactions with students, colleagues, parents, and staff.
  • Communicate effectively with parents regarding any concerns and provide exceptional customer service in a professional and caring manner.
  • Exhibit flexibility and adaptability to accommodate last-minute changes in daily operations.
Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree (minimum).
  • At least one year of experience working with school-age children in a professional environment (Middle School/High School preferred).
  • Commitment to the program through the end of June is a non-negotiable requirement.
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English is preferred.
Required Skills
  • Understanding of best practices for working with children in extracurricular settings.
  • Strong communication skills for both individual and group interactions.
  • Demonstrated accountability for program outcomes and initiative in implementing positive changes amidst challenges.
