Key Responsibilities

As a Precision Gear Machinist Specialist at Northern Gear and Machining, you will be responsible for setting up, adjusting, and operating one or more CNC gear hobbing machines, shapers, and shavers to machine close tolerance splines or gear teeth on metal blanks according to specifications, machining instructions, and knowledge of gear hobbing procedures.

Essential Functions
  • Machining Operations: Read machining instructions, blueprints, work orders, and specification sheets to define machine settings, fixtures, and required hobs used for gear specifications. Properly power up and down the machine, load and unload parts, ensure proper tooling.
  • Setup and Operation: Select, align, and secure fixtures, holders, tooling, hobs, and attachments. Set up and operate the machine to verify the accuracy of CNC settings or programs, calculating and setting controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut.
  • Quality Control: Verify conformance of hobbed gears to specifications using micrometers, gauges, and a computerized gear checker.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Conduct all assigned and necessary preventative maintenance procedures, detect machine malfunctions, test the operation of the machine for functionality and performance, and make adjustments as needed.
  • Collaboration and Training: Confer with engineers, programmers, production employees, and management to resolve machining issues. Assist and train operators in the gear/hob/shaper department.
Requirements
  • Physical Ability: Requires physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position. Ability to walk, stand, lift, carry up to 40 pounds, push, kneel, bend, stoop, reach over and under waist level, twist for extended periods of time.
  • Communication Skills: Demonstrate verbal and written communication skills necessary to complete forms, input data into computer quality, production, and engineering programs, and exchange information with other team members.
  • Certifications and Experience: Ability to read and understand blueprints, operate in a fast-paced production atmosphere, and relevant certifications and experience in CNC machining and gear hobbing.
