Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled IT Systems Manager to join our team at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. As a key member of our IT department, you will be responsible for the analysis, development, and maintenance of our operating systems software and storage.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver high-quality IT consulting services to our departments, providing expert advice and support to ensure seamless operations.
  • Assist in the planning and development of computer systems, ensuring they meet the needs of our organization.
  • Support the operations of our virtualized environment, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency.
  • Direct the implementation and maintenance of computer systems, ensuring they are secure and up-to-date.
  • Prepare contract and purchase specifications for departmental computer hardware and software purchases, ensuring compliance with district policies.
  • Manage specific departmental systems, including identification, diagnosis, and resolution of day-to-day hardware and software operational problems.
  • Manage security and backup of computer systems, ensuring data integrity and availability.
  • Review departmental computer requests, prepare annual departmental computer budgets, cost justifications, and supporting reports.
  • Represent the department on various ad hoc and standing committees, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
  • Manage the implementation and maintenance of departmental computer networks, providing access to authorized databases.
  • Participate in the ongoing training and development of subordinate IT staff, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge needed to succeed.
  • Evaluate vendor-supplied software packages, making recommendations to IT management.
  • Modify, install, and prepare technical documentation for system software applications, storage management software and hardware, and backup and recovery systems.
  • Diagnose, isolate, and debug software and hardware problems, ensuring prompt resolution and minimal disruption to operations.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Considerable knowledge of operating systems software, including operating systems, programming languages, application software, utility software, proprietary programming products, and database management systems.
  • Considerable knowledge of computer hardware systems, including peripherals and storage hardware.
  • Ability to analyze IT problems and issues, recommending effective short- and long-term solutions.
  • Ability to work effectively with other IT personnel, user groups, vendors, and consultants.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Education and Experience

You will need:

  • Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university, majoring in information technology, computer science, or a closely related field.
  • Four years of experience in the installation, configuration, and maintenance of operating systems.
Substitution

Graduate study in the designated fields may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years. Full-time paid experience in the installation, configuration, and maintenance of operating systems may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Promotional Requirement

To be eligible for this role, you must:

  • Have two years of service with the District as a Systems Analyst or an IT Support Coordinator.
  • Hold civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
