Position Overview

The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) spearheads innovative research across three pivotal domains: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD personnel are extensive as we strive to enhance the impact of PNNL's scientific mission: to comprehend, forecast, and manage the intricate adaptive systems that underpin the science of Earth, energy, and security.

Key Responsibilities

The Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI) at PNNL is on the lookout for one or more Energy/Environment/Economy Scientists to engage in research focused on the integrated modeling and analysis of long-term transitions and interactions among energy, water, land, economy, and climate systems. Potential areas of focus include:

  • Modeling and analysis of trade and regional teleconnections in long-term energy and agricultural systems.
  • Exploration of minerals and materials and their significance in long-term transitions.
  • Assessment of climate impacts on energy-water-land systems.
  • Development of regional decarbonization strategies.
  • Characterization and representation of emerging technologies such as carbon dioxide removal and hydrogen in a comprehensive, integrated model (GCAM).

The primary work location will be at JGCRI. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to various projects, including technical analysis, research utilizing JGCRI's flagship Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM), and project leadership.

Anticipated Tasks

The selected candidate will engage in a range of tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Conducting research, modeling, and analysis, culminating in technical reports and publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Presenting findings at scientific and technical conferences, as well as to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Modeling and analyzing decarbonization strategies and future energy system configurations at various scales using GCAM.
  • Contributing strategically and technically to the development of new analytical and modeling capabilities centered around GCAM and associated tools.
  • Leading sections of technical proposals and contributing to strategic project leadership.
  • Collaborating closely with interdisciplinary scientists at PNNL and other research institutions, as well as with sponsoring agencies and decision-makers.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA with 2 years of relevant experience -OR-
  • MS/MA -OR-
  • PhD

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD with 1 year of relevant experience; MS or MA Degree with 3 years of relevant experience. Candidates with additional experience will also be considered.
  • PhD, MS, or MA Degree in Engineering, Economics, Public Policy, Physical Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with integrated assessment modeling, multisector modeling, energy systems, or energy-economic modeling.
  • A record of publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Project management experience, including mentoring and supervising junior staff and students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of multi-disciplinary science teams.
