Position Overview
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is on the lookout for one or more Sustainability Systems Analysts to engage in research focused on the comprehensive modeling and evaluation of long-term interactions among energy, water, land, economy, and climate systems. This role may emphasize various domains, including:
- Analysis of trade dynamics and regional interconnections in the context of long-term energy and agricultural frameworks;
- Exploration of minerals and materials and their significance in sustainable transitions;
- Assessment of climate impacts on energy-water-land systems;
- Development of regional strategies for decarbonization;
- Characterization and representation of innovative technologies such as carbon dioxide removal and hydrogen within an integrated modeling framework.
The primary work location will be at PNNL. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to various projects, including technical assessments, research utilizing PNNL's flagship modeling tool, and project leadership responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducting research, modeling, and analysis, which includes generating technical documentation, publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting at scientific and technical forums;
- Performing modeling and analysis related to decarbonization strategies and future energy configurations across global, regional, national, and subnational levels;
- Strategically and technically contributing to the enhancement of analytical and modeling capabilities, particularly focusing on integrated assessment tools;
- Leading sections of technical proposals and providing strategic project leadership;
- Collaborating closely with interdisciplinary teams at PNNL, partner institutions, and various stakeholders.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree with 2 years of relevant experience -OR-
- Master's degree -OR-
- Doctoral degree.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Doctoral degree with 1 year of relevant experience; Master's degree with 3 years of relevant experience. Candidates with additional experience will also be considered.
- Advanced degree in Engineering, Economics, Public Policy, Physical Science, or a related discipline.
- Experience in integrated assessment modeling, multisector analysis, energy systems, or energy-economic modeling.
- Proven track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Experience in project management, including mentoring and supervising junior staff and students.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
