Role Overview:

This position plays a crucial role in the development and operation of New Glenn, a versatile heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle designed for regular missions to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar space, and beyond. The first stage of this vehicle is fully reusable, emphasizing our commitment to human-capable spaceflight from the outset.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and configure structural components of launch vehicle propellant tanks, including internal frameworks and interfaces.
  • Conduct in-depth design, analysis, development, and testing of primary and secondary composite structures exposed to cryogenic environments.
  • Engage in research, concept development, and trade studies.
  • Create 3D models, detailed part drawings, assembly documents, and interface control documents.
  • Develop test plans, specifications, and documentation for flight hardware development.
  • Provide technical guidance for integration processes.
  • Support manufacturing and production efforts, including necessary travel.
  • Assist in configuration development and trade studies.
  • Participate in subsystem test planning, execution, data analysis, and interpretation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to select materials, manufacturing processes, and suppliers for high-quality aerospace components.
  • Establish component specifications and oversee supplier relationships.
  • Plan, coordinate, and conduct tests while reviewing test data.
  • Contribute to the acquisition and development of new equipment and tooling.
  • Maintain and report on project schedules, budgets, and technical progress.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and cost efficiencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required.
  • Experience with launch vehicles, aircraft, or related fields in areas such as:
    • Design of lightweight structures, particularly pressurized systems.
    • Development of interfaces for fluid systems, including baffles and cryogenic seals.
    • Material science and structural testing.
  • Familiarity with composite structures and adhesive bonding techniques.
  • Strong grasp of structural design and analysis principles for both composites and metals.
  • Proficient mechanical design skills using tools like Creo and CATIA V5.
  • Ability to perform structural analysis through classical calculations and finite element methods.
  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (ASME Y14.5).
  • Proven ability to build trust and maintain professional relationships in a collaborative environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Passion for developing innovative composite cryogenic tank solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills with a talent for building consensus among diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping techniques for hardware development.
  • Expertise in industry-standard analysis software such as Ansys, Nastran, or LS Dyna.
  • Familiarity with fabrication techniques like automated fiber placement and out-of-autoclave composite structures.
  • Experience in developing manufacturing processes for high-rate production.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering, fabrication, integration processes, and quality assurance.
  • Experience with optimization and Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies.
  • Background in multi-functional teams focused on material selection and manufacturing processes for engineered products.
