Job Overview

Position Summary:

The Pest Management Technician plays a vital role within Vanderbilt University Maintenance and Operations (VUMO). This position is essential for employing specialized knowledge of pest behavior and control methods to safeguard the health and property of the university. The individual will lead the organization and execution of inspections, treatments, and documentation as part of an integrated pest management strategy across all campus facilities. This role operates during the 3rd shift.

VUMO is responsible for comprehensive facilities support, including construction, renovation, and routine maintenance of University Central spaces; housekeeping services for approximately 5.8 million square feet of various facilities; grounds maintenance for 330 acres of registered arboretum; turf management for athletic fields; and utility services for both University Central and the Medical Center.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain accurate records of all pesticide applications and treatments as mandated by the Department of Agriculture and Plant Operations Pest Control division.
  • Execute pest control operations in accordance with established treatment protocols set forth by Plant Operations.
  • Adhere to all EPA, Federal, State, and University regulations regarding the use, storage, transportation, and disposal of pesticides and related equipment.
  • Possess the knowledge required to manage any spills or accidental contamination that may occur.
  • Communicate daily treatment activities with the shop manager and collaborate with other team members to ensure service continuity and effectiveness.
  • Record daily work hours and report in the work management system.
  • Dismantle and reassemble equipment as necessary to access pest harborage areas and facilitate treatments, including sealing holes and cracks, opening access panels, and installing pest control devices.
  • Perform physical tasks, including lifting items over 50 lbs, bending, squatting, climbing, and working from ladders.
  • Utilize, calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair all application equipment in the field or prepare it for safe transportation.
  • Identify, treat, control, and eliminate both invertebrate and vertebrate pests in industrial, institutional, and structural settings.
  • Employ common hand tools and power tools necessary for treatments and specific chemical applications, such as hammer drills and power sprayers.
  • Comply with the regulations set forth by the TN Department of Agriculture.
  • Perform other duties as assigned related to the classification.
Supervisory Relationships:

This position does not include supervisory responsibilities and reports to the Assistant Director - Operations.

Education and Certifications:
  • A valid TN driver's license is required.
Experience and Skills:
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is required.
  • 3 years of directly related and verifiable experience is preferred. Certification in Industrial, Institutional, Structural, and Health Related Pest Control by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture is required.
  • A General Pest and Rodent Control license issued by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture is preferred.
  • A Bird Control License from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture is preferred.
  • A Nuisance Wildlife Damage Control Permit from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is required.
