Job Overview

Objective of the Role

The CNC Machining Specialist is tasked with the comprehensive layout, fixture design, and programming of advanced CNC lathes and 3-5 axis milling machines within a dynamic team setting. This role encompasses the programming of daily operations for our CNC machining centers and lathes, ensuring alignment with production timelines and the swift prototyping needs of research and development. Collaboration with both manufacturing and R&D teams is essential to foster ongoing enhancements in production and quality protocols. Additionally, this position involves working closely with production planners to uphold the established schedule within our scheduling software.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Deliver machining expertise for the creation of components varying from miniature to large-scale.
  • Interpret complex schematics, prototype designs, electronic files, and verbal directives to facilitate the manufacturing of parts and assemblies through CNC mills, lathes, and various general machine shop tools.
  • Select appropriate tooling and fixtures for optimal performance.
  • Collaborate directly with design engineers to enhance the manufacturability of components.
  • Drive improvements in shop efficiency through design, programming, tooling, and fixture optimizations.
  • Produce high-precision components while demonstrating the ability to write and troubleshoot machine programs.
  • Propose and implement cost-saving strategies for both new and existing projects.
  • Actively seek out new machining technologies and investigate cutting-edge equipment to maintain our shop's competitive edge.
  • Provide labor and material estimates based on supplied drawings, electronic files, and blueprints.
  • Exhibit a foundational understanding of CAD software such as SolidWorks.
  • Demonstrate the capability to work autonomously in GibbsCAM using 3D models imported from SolidWorks.
  • Independently troubleshoot unanticipated issues as they arise.

Physical Requirements:

This role may involve active engagement, requiring the ability to stand or sit for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks. The position may necessitate exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally. While executing job duties, employees may encounter moving mechanical components and, at times, potentially hazardous chemicals or fumes, although ventilation systems typically mitigate harmful effects. Work environments may also be noisy.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a machining environment is required.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent work experience.
  • Relevant certification or completion of a trade school program is highly advantageous.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Extensive knowledge of CNC lathes, vertical and horizontal milling processes.
  • Proficiency in programming complex tasks on 4+ axis machinery.
  • Experience with controls from manufacturers such as Haas, Fanuc, and Okuma.
  • Understanding of manual programming techniques (G codes/M codes).
  • Familiarity with DNC system operations.
  • Ability to fabricate precision tools and fixtures.
  • Experience in machining tight tolerances and intricate geometries.
  • Solid grasp of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing principles.
  • Programming experience with multi-tasking machines is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks is essential.
  • Proficiency in GibbsCAM is mandatory.
  • Commitment to maintaining high-quality standards.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in all areas of Microsoft Office is required.
