Job Summary

The City of Hermosa Beach is seeking a highly skilled Code Enforcement Officer to join our team. As a key member of our Community Development Department, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with zoning and building codes and ordinances, interacting with the public to investigate and respond to citizen and business complaints and violations, and performing other related duties as required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect properties to determine compliance with City codes and policies
  • Coordinate work with the City Prosecutor as required
  • Answer complaints and citizen requests for enforcement of City ordinances
  • Conduct regular field inspections
  • Meet with owners, tenants, contractors, and developers to review and explain code requirements and violations
  • Prepare documents, photographs, and other records as needed
Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Knowledge of applicable laws, standards, and regulations related to land use, nuisance, public safety codes, and inspection techniques
  • Ability to prepare, organize, and maintain field data, reports, and systems
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens, employees, supervisors, and the general public
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and deal with difficult or angry people
Requirements

To be considered for this role, you will need:

  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • Experience in code enforcement, inspection, or investigation activities involving substantial public contact
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license with a safe driving record
  • Penal Code 823 (PC823) Certification
Working Environment

This role requires working in an indoor and outdoor environment, with the ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods, walk on uneven terrain, and lift moderate amounts of weight. You will also need to operate office equipment and vehicles, and verbally communicate with the public.
