Job Summary:

This position involves examining patients with a wide range of visual problems, diagnosing visual diseases, disorders, and deficiencies, and prescribing treatment as licensed and credentialed. The optometrist will also refer patients to other appropriate Kaiser Permanente providers as needed for further evaluation and treatment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct thorough eye exams using a range of optometry instruments and techniques.
  • Diagnose and treat visual diseases, disorders, and deficiencies in accordance with state laws and regulations.
  • Prescribe and fit contact lenses as needed.
  • Determine the visual requirements of partially sighted patients.
  • Prescribe low-vision aids such as telescopic and microscopic lenses, magnifiers, and other optical devices to aid low-vision patients.
  • Use diagnostic pharmaceutical agents to detect and diagnose ocular pathology in accordance with state laws and regulations.
  • Use examination techniques to determine ocular signs of systemic diseases and medications.
  • Refer patients to other appropriate Kaiser Permanente providers as needed for further evaluation and treatment.
  • Participate in departmental and educational meetings, including peer review activities within the department and medical facility.
  • Consult regularly with internal medicine, pediatrics, and ophthalmology on patient care issues.
  • Assist in implementing eye care in-service education programs for medical center staff and at patient education seminars.
  • Evaluate and manage stated anterior segment disorders under the standing orders of a physician and in co-management with an ophthalmologist.
Additional Requirements:
  • Must have a graduation from an accredited school of Optometry.
  • Must be enrolled in PECOS within 90 days of hire date.
  • Must have an Optometrist License (Maryland) OR Optometrist License (Virginia) OR Optometrist License (District of Columbia).
  • Must have Basic Life Support required at hire from American Heart Association.
  • Must have National Provider Identifier required at hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an interdisciplinary health care environment preferred or successful completion of accredited residency program.
  • Accredited residency in Optometry preferred.
Work Environment:

This position requires working in a fast-paced medical environment with a high level of patient interaction. The optometrist will be required to travel to all NOVA optometry centers based on business need.
