Role Overview:

We are in search of a Senior Staff Firmware Engineer to spearhead firmware development and architectural design. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience with FPGA and Xilinx technologies.

Key Qualifications:

  • Proficient in developing sophisticated instrument control software using Python and/or C, C++.
  • Solid background in FPGA, TI DSP, Xilinx Spartan, Zynq Ultrascale+, Vivado, and Vitis.
  • Comprehension of Python's capabilities and limitations, with a strong commitment to testing and maintaining a clean codebase.
  • A dependable architect that peers can rely on, demonstrating technical excellence and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Self-motivated and collaborative, eager to explore new challenges and deliver functional systems.

Desired Background:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field with at least 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Alternatively, a Master's degree with a minimum of 8 years in software development and architectural design.
  • Hands-on expertise in Python, C, and C++ for control systems.
  • Experience in the architecture and design of next-generation instruments.
  • Long-term development of instrument codebases.
  • Practical experience in embedded firmware development, architecture, and design with various analog and digital I/O, FPGA, DSP, and microcontrollers.
  • Familiarity with hardware description languages such as Verilog and VHDL.
  • Knowledge of communication protocols including SPI, I2C, Ethernet, and RS232.
  • Experience with narrowband and broadband lasers is advantageous.
  • Understanding of materials physics and gas analysis is a plus.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Drive the development of next-generation analyzers while enhancing existing systems.
  • Collaborate with scientists to implement processing strategies for experimental hardware.
  • Design and develop embedded systems that align with strategic business objectives and exceed client expectations.
  • Adhere to industry-standard design, development, and testing methodologies.
  • Promote best-in-class software development practices and design methodologies for new products.
  • Engage with and support other R&D and engineering teams throughout all development stages.

Essential Skills:

  • Expertise in instrumentation system design and architecture.
  • Proficient in embedded development.
  • Strong command of Python3 and Linux.
  • Experience with FPGA or Xilinx technologies.

Preferred Experience:

  • Background in control systems development.
  • Firmware development and electrical engineering knowledge (both digital and analog design).
  • Experience with FPGA and/or DSP for high-speed data acquisition is highly valued.
  • Ability to rapidly prototype and validate software with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in optical absorption spectroscopy and laser-based instrumentation is desirable.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Annual salary range: $200,000 - $260,000.

Note: Salary and title will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and the compensation of similar roles.
