JOB TITLE : Surgical Technologist

SUPERVISION RECEIVED : Physician and/or Registered Nurse

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES :

Surgical technologists, often referred to as scrubs or operating room technicians, play a crucial role in assisting during surgical procedures under the guidance of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical staff. They are integral members of surgical teams, which typically consist of surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS :

Completion of an accredited surgical technologist program. Certification in CPR is required, along with 0-2 years of relevant clinical experience. Experience in ophthalmic procedures is preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

Prepare and maintain surgical instruments and medical equipment for procedures. Assist in preparing the operating room by arranging surgical instruments, sterile drapes, and solutions prior to operations. Adhere to hospital protocols and industry standards to support patient care during pre-operative processes. Conduct pre-operative preparations for patients, including skin cleansing and equipment setup. Assemble both sterile and non-sterile instruments, ensuring proper functionality. Prepare patients for surgery by performing necessary hygiene and disinfecting incision sites. Safely transport patients to the operating room, assist in positioning them on the surgical table, and cover them with sterile drapes. Monitor patients' vital signs, review medical charts, and assist the surgical team in donning sterile gowns and gloves. Provide instruments and sterile supplies to surgeons and surgical assistants. Hold retractors, cut sutures, and assist in counting sponges, needles, and instruments. Aid in preparing, caring for, and disposing of specimens for laboratory analysis, as well as applying dressings. Operate sterilizers, surgical lights, and suction machines, and assist with diagnostic equipment. After surgery, help transfer patients to recovery and ensure the operating room is cleaned and restocked. Perform additional duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS :

Ability to remain on feet for extended periods and assist in lifting or moving patients. Requires both sitting and standing typical of an office environment. Ability to focus for extended periods, up to four hours. Strong verbal communication skills, both in person and over the phone. Proficient in using a computer keyboard and able to view a computer monitor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES :

Must demonstrate the necessary knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care to patients. Understanding of growth and development principles across the lifespan, with the ability to assess data reflective of patients' specific needs. Proficient in the nursing process and its application. Ability to utilize effective communication channels. Strong interpersonal skills to maintain positive relationships with patients, colleagues, and other healthcare team members.

ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS : Clean, well-lit, and cool environments typical of surgical settings. Surgical technologists must be prepared to stand for long periods and maintain alertness during procedures. Exposure to communicable diseases and unpleasant sights, odors, and materials may occur.
