Position Summary
This role involves conducting both waived and non-waived laboratory tests as per CLIA '88 standards, ensuring accuracy and timeliness under supervision. The technician aids in maintaining compliance with relevant laboratory accreditation and regulatory standards, including CLIA '88, JCAHO, CAP, and OSHA. The position reports to the laboratory supervisor and may include responsibilities related to the collection, receipt, and processing of biological specimens.

Key Responsibilities
1. Execute laboratory tests accurately and promptly, adhering to established protocols and performance metrics. Responsible for the initiation, calibration, and precision of testing procedures and equipment. Demonstrate independent judgment and resourcefulness in fulfilling assigned tasks, showcasing a solid understanding of testing theory and clinical significance. Exhibit problem-solving capabilities for routine operational and technical challenges. Familiarity with departmental computer systems and basic troubleshooting is essential.

2. Identify and validate abnormal patient and quality control results. Ensure the reliability of test outcomes and participate in documenting any deviations from standard procedures. Actively engage in resolving issues encountered during testing and consistently uphold departmental productivity and quality standards.

3. Manage the appropriate use of laboratory supplies and assist in inventory oversight. Ensure the effective utilization of reagents and materials, and contribute ideas for enhancing financial performance, productivity, and service quality.

4. Take initiative in contributing to projects as identified by the supervisor. Seek opportunities to address departmental needs through project involvement. Participate in the training of laboratory staff and perform effectively in the supervisor's absence, providing guidance on pre-analytical, waived, and non-waived testing processes. Complete all mandatory training modules.

5. Communicate professionally and effectively with both internal and external stakeholders. Engage in resolving communication challenges and utilize available resources for advanced problem-solving. Exhibit strong verbal and written communication skills, fostering positive interactions that promote teamwork. Attend and participate in staff meetings.

6. Process and prepare patient samples as necessary, which may include specimen collection, general laboratory processing, and referral laboratory processing. Ensure accurate patient and specimen identification and maintain specimen integrity throughout.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must meet one of the following criteria:
    • Associate degree in laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or
    • Bachelor's degree in chemical or biological science (transcripts will be reviewed for eligibility).
    • Equivalent laboratory training and experience as defined by CLIA regulations, or
    • Meet other criteria outlined in CLIA regulations including military medical laboratory training.
  • Foreign-educated candidates must provide a detailed credential evaluation from a recognized agency for eligibility assessment.
  • Demonstrated competency in phlebotomy where applicable.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (ASCP, AMT, HEW, AAB).
  • Basic understanding of specimen requirements and medical terminology.
  • Prior experience in phlebotomy and specimen processing.
  • Additional relevant education and/or experience.
