Under the general oversight of the Team Leader and Director of Surgical Services, the Registered Nurse in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is accountable for delivering safe, effective, and high-quality patient and family-centered care within Surgical Services.

Patient Advocacy:

  • Safeguards the rights, dignity, and privacy of patients.
  • Creates a compassionate atmosphere by offering emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, their families, and friends.
  • Develops and maintains a personalized care plan that addresses developmental and cultural needs.
  • Encourages patient autonomy by setting care objectives and educating patients, families, and friends about their conditions, medications, and self-care techniques.
  • Addresses patient concerns and needs through collaborative strategies with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Utilizes appropriate resources for patients with language barriers, as well as those with hearing or vision impairments, and those facing healthcare literacy challenges.
  • Takes proactive measures to identify and report suspected abuse, including child, elder, sexual, and domestic abuse.
Clinical Competency:
  • Conducts patient assessments at regular intervals and communicates their status throughout the care continuum, ensuring protection from injury related to chemicals, electricity, positioning, heat, and other external factors.
  • Implements a 'time out' procedure for every patient to confirm the correct side, site, and level prior to any procedure.
  • Initiates intravenous therapy competently and serves as a resource for intravenous therapy requirements within the facility.
  • Administers medications accurately and monitors post-operative patients to maintain or enhance respiratory, circulatory, and neurological functions.
  • Executes interventions to sustain body systems, fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances, as well as wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels.
  • Provides effective pain management strategies.
  • Implements measures to ensure patients achieve or maintain normothermia at the conclusion of procedures.
  • Prevents infection through proper hand hygiene and aseptic techniques.
  • Transfers patient care using approved handoff protocols.
  • Documents nursing care consistently, promptly, and without omissions.
  • Delegates tasks appropriately in accordance with the state Nurse Practice Act and job descriptions, while recognizing and responding effectively to emergency situations.
  • May require lifting more than 25 pounds.
Quality Assurance:
  • Ensures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards, evaluating health outcomes against patient care goals, and making or recommending necessary adjustments.
  • Complies with the hospital and nursing division's mission, philosophies, and standards of care, and participates in quality review and performance improvement initiatives.
Professional Development:
  • Maintains professional and technical expertise by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional literature, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional organizations.
  • Demonstrates accountability as a healthcare professional by acknowledging individual responsibility for actions.
Organizational Expectations:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Qualifications:

Education: Graduate from an accredited nursing program; BSN preferred.

Experience: Current clinical skills within the scope of practice; ability to organize work and prioritize tasks effectively; knowledge of current infection control practices; positive bedside manner; understanding of the physiological, social, and spiritual aspects of patient care; safe medication administration; effective collaboration within the healthcare team; ability to work irregular hours, including on-call shifts.

Licenses and Certifications:

Current State License or Registration.

Basic Life Support certification.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
