Role Summary:


The Department of Pharmacy at UNC Health Care is seeking a dedicated professional focused on delivering pharmaceutical care to our neonatal and pediatric patients.


This pediatric clinical specialist will collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive pharmaceutical support for patients in our advanced Neonatal Critical Care Center (NCCC).

Additional areas of service may include Hematology/Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplant, Pediatric Intensive Care, Pulmonary/Cystic Fibrosis, Endocrine, and Cardiology. The NCCC pharmacist will primarily work during the day shift (7am-3:30pm).

This role includes the responsibility of mentoring students from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy as well as both PGY1 and PGY2 residents.

UNC Children's clinical home, recognized as a leading referral center for children with complex conditions, is consistently acknowledged as one of the top children's hospitals.

With 172 inpatient beds and a comprehensive outpatient center, our facility allows patients to consult multiple specialists in a single visit.

The Pediatric Services at UNC Hospitals and Clinics are expanding.

Our mission in pediatric pharmacy is to deliver quality, patient-centered care in collaboration with healthcare professionals for all pediatric patients by practicing evidence-based medicine, optimizing medication use, and ensuring medication safety.


The Department of Pharmacy plays a crucial role in patient care within the UNC Health Care system.

With over 500 dedicated employees, the Department focuses on patient care across the UNC Health Care system.

We maintain a strong partnership with the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy, located on the same campus.

UNC Hospitals and Clinics serves as a primary clinical and administrative training site for pharmacy students and hosts over 40 pharmacy residents.


Qualified candidates should possess a BS in Pharmacy or a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited institution and must be licensed or eligible for licensure in North Carolina.

Completion of a PGY1 or PGY2 residency in pediatrics or equivalent pharmacy experience is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate strong initiative, communication, analytical skills, organization, and teamwork.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensures timely access to medications for patients, including reviewing and verifying orders. Collaborates with prescribers and healthcare professionals to resolve any prescription issues.
  • Utilizes patient data to recommend optimal drug therapies. Evaluates medication regimens and makes necessary clinical interventions.
  • Implements protocol-driven clinical services such as therapeutic dose monitoring and antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Oversees the preparation and dispensing of medications, including sterile products, adhering to established formulas and procedures.
  • Maintains accurate patient profiles within electronic medical records to enhance communication.
  • Adheres to medication formulary and therapeutic substitution programs to optimize drug therapy while minimizing costs.
  • Facilitates patient discharge and transfer processes, including medication reconciliation and counseling.
  • Practices medication safety, including reporting adverse drug events and medication errors.
  • Participates in emergency situations for pediatric patients.
  • Mentors students and residents and assists in training new pharmacy staff as needed.

Qualifications:

  • PharmD or BS Pharmacy Degree

Licensure Requirements:

  • Active pharmacist licensure with the NC Board of Pharmacy or obtainable prior to employment initiation.
