Role Summary:


The Department of Pharmacy at UNC Health Care is seeking a dedicated individual to provide exceptional pharmaceutical care to our neonatal and pediatric patients.


This clinical pharmacy specialist will collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to deliver comprehensive medication management in our Level IV Neonatal Critical Care Center (NCCC). Additional responsibilities may include support in Hematology/Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplant, Pediatric Intensive Care, Pulmonary/Cystic Fibrosis, Endocrine, and Cardiology. The position primarily operates during day shifts (7am-3:30pm).

The pharmacist will also play a key role in educating students from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, as well as both PGY1 and PGY2 residents.

UNC Children's clinical home, N.C. Children's Hospital, is recognized as a leading referral center for children with complex medical conditions and is consistently acknowledged by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top children's hospitals in the nation.

With 172 inpatient beds and a comprehensive outpatient center, our facility allows for coordinated care across multiple specialties in a single visit.

The Pediatric Services at UNC Hospitals and Clinics are expanding. Our mission in pediatric pharmacy is to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care in collaboration with healthcare professionals, ensuring optimal medication use and safety for all pediatric patients.


The Department of Pharmacy is an integral component of the patient care services provided by the UNC Health Care system.

Our department comprises over 500 committed professionals focused on patient care within the UNC Health Care system.

We maintain a strong partnership with the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy, located on the same campus.

UNC Hospitals and Clinics serves as a primary clinical and administrative training site for pharmacy students and hosts over 40 pharmacy residents.


Qualified candidates will possess a BS in Pharmacy or a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited institution and must be licensed or eligible for licensure in North Carolina. Completion of a PGY1 or PGY2 residency in pediatrics or equivalent pharmacy experience is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate strong initiative, communication, analytical, organizational, and collaborative skills.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure timely access to medications for patients, including order review and verification. Collaborate with prescribers and healthcare professionals to resolve any discrepancies in prescriptions.
  • Utilize patient data to provide optimal medication therapy recommendations. Assess and adjust medication regimens as necessary.
  • Conduct protocol-driven clinical services such as therapeutic drug monitoring and antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Oversee the preparation and dispensing of medications, including sterile products, adhering to established protocols.
  • Maintain accurate patient profiles within electronic medical records to enhance communication.
  • Adhere to medication formulary guidelines and therapeutic substitution programs to optimize drug therapy.
  • Facilitate patient discharge and transfer processes, including medication reconciliation and counseling.
  • Promote medication safety through reporting of adverse drug events and medication errors.
  • Participate in emergency response situations for pediatric patients.
  • Precept pharmacy students and residents, and assist in training new pharmacy staff as needed.

Qualifications:

  • PharmD or BS Pharmacy Degree

Licensure Requirements:

  • Active pharmacist licensure with the NC Board of Pharmacy or eligibility to obtain licensure prior to employment commencement.
