Overview of Position

This role involves working within a Resource classroom setting. A special education teacher operates under the guidance of the building principal or program manager, collaborating with relevant staff members. The teacher is responsible for creating and maintaining a supportive learning atmosphere, setting and modifying educational objectives tailored to the needs of special education students, and providing individualized instruction, counseling, and supervision to support each student's growth and progress.

Key Responsibilities

40% Cultivates a learning environment that promotes the development of special education students; designs instructional programs to address individual needs; prepares tailored lesson plans; adjusts programs as necessary.
15% Utilizes appropriate instructional methods and materials that cater to the well-being of students and align with the curriculum; implements program objectives tailored for the student population; engages in professional development to stay updated on special education teaching methods.
10% Establishes and enforces classroom policies and procedures to promote positive behavior; provides guidance and support to help students meet behavioral and academic standards; refers students for additional assistance when necessary.
5% Engages with students, parents, and staff to foster positive relationships that support student achievement and well-being.
10% Sets educational goals and objectives aligned with the individual education programs of special education students, adhering to relevant regulations; monitors and records student progress; prepares reports for families.
5% Oversees the activities of support staff; ensures that the physical, emotional, and medical needs of students are met.
10% Collects and analyzes data; develops and assesses individual education plans (IEPs); prepares reports for administrative purposes.
5% Participates in required staff meetings and professional development activities to fulfill job responsibilities and enhance professional skills.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree; experience in teaching diverse student populations, particularly in urban settings; background in special education preferred.

Licenses/Special Requirements: Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with Special Education Endorsement; may require first aid and CPR certification.
