Aquatic Safety Attendant (After School and Summer)

GENERAL PURPOSE

This position involves performing essential customer service and aquatic safety responsibilities to ensure the smooth operation of the aquatic facility. The role requires the application of lifesaving techniques and CPR as necessary, along with participation in ongoing training for physical and rescue skills. Additional duties include general maintenance tasks and various related projects as assigned.

Works under the general oversight of the Aquatics Manager or Head Lifeguard.

None.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

General Operations:

Engages with the public to facilitate a safe and enjoyable experience in the swimming area; applies lifesaving techniques and CPR as required; actively participates in physical and rescue skills training.

Lifeguard Duties:

Rotates through assigned shifts; ensures effective supervision of patrons in the pool and surrounding areas to minimize the risk of accidents; monitors swimmers, executes rescue maneuvers, administers CPR in accordance with training protocols, and assists with or instructs swimming lessons.

Delivers exceptional customer service to pool users; observes patron behavior; enforces pool regulations consistently and tactfully; takes appropriate action for rule violations; ensures compliance with policies and procedures among lifeguards.

Conducts general maintenance tasks, including cleaning as directed; maintains a clear pool area to prevent hazards; adheres to emergency procedures outlined in the Pool Manual; completes incident reports promptly and submits them to the Aquatics Manager. Sets up and dismantles equipment in the swimming pool or adjacent facilities as necessary. Addresses customer inquiries and concerns effectively; attends all staff meetings and training sessions; informs the Aquatics Manager and Head Lifeguard of any equipment and inventory needs. Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Education and Experience:

A. Must be at least 15 years old and demonstrate the ability to perform the duties outlined above;
AND
B. No prior experience is necessary.

2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Some familiarity with the rules and regulations governing various aquatic and recreational activities; understanding of water safety practices, rules, and guidelines; awareness of potential bio-hazards associated with aquatic operations.

Ability to demonstrate proficient swimming skills; establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public; communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; exhibit sound judgment and decision-making skills.

3. Special Qualifications:

Must successfully complete a pre-course swimming skills assessment prior to enrolling in the Lifeguard certification course. Ability to pass performance proficiency tests based on American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and AED certification standards. Position requires submission to random drug and alcohol testing.

4. Work Environment:

Employees in this role are exposed to seasonal weather variations. Tasks involve a range of physical activities, typically requiring muscular exertion, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, pulling, pushing, and lifting. Effective communication, hearing, and visual acuity are essential for daily tasks. Dexterity in hands and fingers is necessary for performing essential duties. Mental application involves memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving.
