Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Financial Accountant to join our team at Corporate Office Properties Trust. As a key member of our accounting team, you will be responsible for ensuring the integrity of financial information for a portfolio of properties.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Month-End Close Activities: Perform assigned month-end close activities for assigned portfolio of properties, including proposing and recording monthly journal entries, preparing variance analysis, and ensuring internal controls are maintained.
  2. Lease Document Review: Review lease documents to ensure accurate billings and CAM cost pool set-up, and work with the Portfolio Controller and Lease Administration to complete annual adjustment billings.
  3. Budget and Forecast Preparation: Work with the Portfolio Controller to prepare and analyze budgets and forecasts.
  4. Pay Invoices and Recordings: Monitor and review pay invoices to ensure timely payment and recording, as well as proper coding.
  5. Books and Records Maintenance: Work with the Portfolio Controller to maintain books and records for assigned properties, prepare balance sheet account reconciliations, and resolve outstanding items.
Secondary Responsibilities
  1. Tenant Account Monitoring: Monitor tenant accounts for completeness and accuracy, and support the Accounts Receivable function in resolving questions and issues.
  2. Due Diligence Participation: Participate in the due diligence process for acquisitions, dispositions, or financing, which requires an intense effort in a compressed time frame.
  3. Internal Controls and Policies: Participate in maintaining internal controls and policies of COPT, and communicate any deficiencies in controls to the Supervisor.
  4. Other Job-Related Duties: Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required; completion of degree expected within 18-24 months of entrance into position.
  • Experience: 1-3 years related accounting experience with increased responsibility and strong performance necessary; will consider college graduate with COPT internship experience.
  • Professional Certifications: CPA or CPA Candidate preferred.
  • Technical Skills: PC proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn company-specific software, as well as familiarity with accounting systems such as Voyager.

  • Problem-Solving and Judgment: Demonstrated ability to manage and comprehend multiple and complex business transactions and documents simultaneously with good and possibly independent judgment.
  • Strong Problem-Solving Skills: Must have strong problem-solving skills and a solutions-based approach to identified areas of opportunity.
  • Independence and Knowledge: Must be able to work independently and possess a working knowledge of GAAP and Sarbanes-Oxley.
