Position Overview
The Director of Laboratory Operations is accountable for overseeing the daily functions of the American Society for Clinical Pathology's Pathology Laboratory. This role encompasses the provision of on-site Clinical and Client Services, as well as Quality Assurance Services across all affiliated laboratories.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain training manuals, policies, and procedures to enhance laboratory operations.
- Manage and uphold the Quality Assurance Program, ensuring that Quality Control protocols are consistently updated and adhered to.
- Collaborate with Human Resources to ensure the laboratory is staffed with qualified personnel.
- Support external training initiatives, facilitating internships for students in Histology.
- Work closely with Client Services to establish and enhance services for new clients.
Operational Management
- Ensure that all laboratory operations deliver high-quality services in a timely manner, addressing client concerns promptly and effectively.
- Oversee multiple laboratories, focusing on efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Engage with upper management to resolve equipment and operational challenges, including successful completion of inspections.
Job Duties
- Supervise operational activities across anatomic pathology labs to guarantee quality and timely performance.
- Assist in managing staff, including hiring, coaching, training, and performance monitoring.
- Direct strategic operations in key sections, including Digital Pathology, setting performance goals and conducting evaluations.
Compliance and Financial Oversight
- Ensure compliance with CAP and CLIA standards and local regulations.
- Monitor financial resources, including budget management and financial reporting.
- Maintain accurate clinical, financial, and employment records in accordance with legal and operational standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field.
- Minimum of five years of relevant experience in a laboratory setting.
- Certification as a Histology Technician or Histotechnologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Certification is preferred.
- Previous experience in a managerial or directorial role within a pathology lab is essential.
Preferred Skills
- Master’s degree in a related field.
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
- Familiarity with the histotechnologist community on both local and national levels.
