Job Summary:

Radiation Therapist - Cancer Care Specialist

Under the direct and indirect supervision of the Lead Therapist, Medical Physicist, and Radiation Oncologist, administer therapeutic radiation to pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Enhance departmental operations through positive relations with patients, family members, and visitors, physician support, and staff interaction. Use independent judgment to maintain continuity of patient care of the highest standards, in an efficient, caring manner.

Responsibilities:

Position patients for treatment with accuracy according to prescription. Administer prescribed doses of radiation to specific body parts, using radiation therapy equipment according to established practices and standards. Check radiation therapy equipment to ensure proper operation. Prepare and construct equipment, such as immobilization, treatment, and protection devices. Review prescription, diagnosis, patient chart, and patient identification. Educate, prepare, and reassure patients and their families by answering questions, providing physical assistance, and reinforcing physicians' advice regarding treatment reactions and post-treatment care. Enter patient data into computer and set controls to operate and adjust equipment and regulate dosage. Observe and reassure patients during and after treatment and report unusual reactions to physician. Follow principles of radiation protection for patient, self, and others. Maintain accurate records, including radiation dosages, elapsed days, equipment settings, appropriate charge capture, and patients' reactions. Ability to work independently, utilizing self-direction to prioritize workload and carry out tasks with flexibility for volume variances. Maintain treatment schedules, give proper notification to patients of treatment times, and notify patients of any scheduling delays. Troubleshoot problems with equipment, patient medical conditions, and patient satisfaction situations. Train and supervise student or newly hired radiation therapists. Follow infection control and universal precaution guidelines. Communicate effectively in writing and speaking to convey information effectively. Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested. Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
