Job Title: Licensed Practical Nurse

We are seeking a skilled Licensed Practical Nurse to join our team at the City of Portsmouth, VA. As a key member of our Behavioral Healthcare Services department, you will provide medical services and medication-related activities in our substance abuse clinic.

Job Summary:

The Licensed Practical Nurse will be responsible for dispensing methadone, documenting services rendered, ordering supplies, and maintaining storage for psychotropic medications. You will also administer injections, check vital signs and weight, screen for medication side effects, and interact with other agencies to provide consumer education and information.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate with aftercare pharmacy to order medications and ensure timely delivery and storage
  • Communicate with pharmacies, consumers, providers, and others regarding medication requests and refills
  • Perform psychotropic medication injections as ordered by physician and maintain records of laboratory tests and results
  • Screen consumers to qualify for pharmacy assistance programs and perform vital signs and weight checks under physician order
  • Monitor and order medical supplies, maintain first aid supplies, and maintain accounting system for supplies
  • Maintain medication storage area with regard to security, cleanliness, organization, and stock
Requirements:
  • Certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the state of Virginia or license eligible
  • 1-2 years of progressively responsible experience providing nursing services to substance abuse clients or any equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Methadone dispensing experience is preferred
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Ability to pass Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Certifications or have the ability to obtain certifications within 90 days from date of hire and maintain them as a condition of employment
Working Conditions:

The Licensed Practical Nurse will work in a fast-paced substance abuse clinic environment, interacting with consumers, staff, and other agencies. The position requires the ability to lift and pull up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and to work in a clean and orderly workplace.
