Key Responsibilities:
- This is a non-supervisory role.
- The Naval Architect and Marine Engineer II will collaborate closely with team members and will require minimal oversight from the direct supervisor.
- Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Prepare, modify, and review scantling and outfitting drawings in compliance with applicable class society and regulatory standards.
- Conduct detailed design and drafting of marine craft structures, plans, and outfitting for new shipbuilding and repair/conversion projects.
- Perform general structural calculations utilizing first principal methods and/or finite element analysis.
- Review construction packages and 3D models generated by design software, ensuring alignment with approved design specifications and addressing any identified issues.
- Interpret and apply regulatory and classification society guidelines.
- Conduct heavy lift calculations.
- Perform stability calculations and assessments.
- Utilize software tools such as GHS, Flow 3D, femap/Nastran, and any additional software adopted by the company.
- Provide solutions to complex structural and shipbuilding challenges encountered in production.
- Assist in integrating design with production processes and collaborate closely with shipyard personnel.
- Capable of performing basic relevant calculations independently.
- Undertake additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
This position reports to the Structure Design Group Manager.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience:
- Bachelor of Science in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or related fields.
- 5-10 years of experience in a ship design or shipbuilding environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, AutoCAD, and Rhinoceros.
- Able to learn department-specific software for various analyses.
- Ability to review and comprehend ship structural and outfitting drawings.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions presented in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
The following knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience are preferred but not mandatory:
- Experience with ABS/USCG regulations is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with GHS, FEA software, and FORAN/Ship Constructor is advantageous.
- Technical writing skills.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Citizenship:
U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident Card required.
Work Environment:
This position is categorized as OFFICE WORK, characterized by the following:
- Primarily indoors during the day, with occasional night work.
- Occasional exposure to airborne dust in the workplace.
- Stable (flat) work surfaces.
- Some site visits may involve exposure to high noise levels and may require climbing ladders and entering confined spaces.
