Naples, New York, United States Uncommon Schools Full time

Company Overview
Uncommon Schools is a nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing high-performing public charter schools that deliver exceptional K-12 education in communities that have historically faced resource challenges.

Our schools reflect the diversity of our student body, with over 60% of our educators and staff identifying as individuals of color.

Uncommon operates 53 schools, serving more than 20,000 students across five cities: Boston, Camden, New York City, Newark, and Rochester.

We take pride in the fact that our graduates persist in and complete college at a rate five times higher than their national peers.

This success is achieved through a strong focus on academic excellence, co-curricular activities, and social-emotional learning, equipping students for success in college and beyond.

Rochester Prep manages six schools that cater to students from grades K through 12.

We believe in fostering authentic relationships between educators and students, supported by effective school systems and an engaging instructional model that allows students to thrive both academically and personally.

Rochester Prep schools consistently rank among the top performers in the city, boasting an impressive 85% college acceptance rate.

Position Overview
Uncommon High School English Language Arts (ELA) instructors are enthusiastic about literature and committed to creating an engaging and rigorous classroom environment that prepares all students for college.

Our educators become specialists in their subject matter and possess a strong ability to motivate and inspire high school learners.

Central to our English classes is a focus on reading and student-led discussions.

Instructors employ a variety of teaching strategies to prioritize dialogue, ignite a passion for literature, and foster strong student voice and agency.

By the end of each academic year, students are better equipped for the academic challenges and independence required in college coursework, as well as developing a lifelong love for reading.

Key Responsibilities
1. Instruction
Utilize a comprehensive literature curriculum shared across our high schools that emphasizes inclusive texts, highlights diversity, and prepares students for Advanced Placement (AP), SAT, and collegiate-level coursework.

Engage in a thorough exploration of daily content to guide students in analyzing works by authors such as James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Shakespeare, and Yaa Gyasi; texts that spark a love for literature, sharpen critical thinking skills, and deepen students' intellectual identities.

Develop students' independent and collaborative reading, writing, and discussion abilities. Facilitate student-led discussions, teaching learners to use evidence to formulate sophisticated arguments and to synthesize and evaluate various perspectives.

Regularly assess student comprehension and writing, adapting lessons to enhance student learning outcomes. Collaborate with your department and grade-level team on content and instructional strategies that support student success.

2. Data Analysis
Engage in weekly meetings with your principal and/or instructional coach to analyze and respond to trends in student work samples and assessments. Implement strategies to differentiate instruction for diverse learners in your classroom. 3. School Culture
Establish positive relationships with students to ensure they feel valued and heard. Collaborate with families to ensure appropriate resources are available to support their child's educational needs. Participate in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions. Engage in weekly, school-wide meetings to foster community, model core values, and promote student achievement. Work with your grade-level team to set academic goals and refine instructional strategies. Qualifications
A commitment to the mission of Uncommon Schools and a dedication to our vision of being an anti-racist organization. A demonstrated commitment to supporting students' social-emotional and academic growth. A passion for collaborating with internal and external partners for the benefit of students. A self-directed learner who seeks and implements feedback to enhance outcomes and achieve objectives.

Required Experience:
A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban educational settings (1-2 years of experience preferred). Academic expertise in Humanities, English, Social Sciences, or related fields of study.

Prior to employment, candidates must possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Certification is not required for hiring at Uncommon, but candidates must meet New York state certification eligibility requirements.

To fulfill these requirements, candidates must enroll in a teacher preparation program and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher during their employment if they do not hold a degree in education.

Uncommon Schools teachers are expected to achieve certification in the state of New York within a reasonable timeframe after starting employment.
