The Accounting Division of Lewis and Clark County is seeking a Senior Accountant. This role operates under the general supervision of the Accounting Manager and is responsible for executing advanced accounting and financial tasks for the County Treasurer's Office and Finance Department.

About Us
The Accounting Department manages all financial transactions related to the operations of Lewis and Clark County. Additionally, the Department oversees debt payments, including both principal and interest. Each year, the Department prepares financial statements and supplementary reports in compliance with governmental accounting and financial reporting standards.

Qualifications
The knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for this position are typically obtained through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, along with four (4) years of experience in accounting and/or finance. Experience in local government is preferred.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gather and prepare schedules, narratives, charges, and graphs for the County's Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR);
  • Review and interpret Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB) regulations, assisting with the implementation of new standards;
  • Complete high-level accounting and finance projects as requested by County leadership and departments;
  • Evaluate and assist in the revision of County finance and accounting policies and procedures;
  • Support all aspects of recording and reporting financial transactions, including cash receipts, coding, posting, balancing, and reconciling the general ledger, subsidiary accounts, grant funds, and cash accounts;
  • Assess and ensure compliance with internal controls, aiding departments in the creation and adherence to related policies and procedures;
  • Conduct internal audits of departmental accounting practices;
  • Provide guidance and training to accounting support staff;
  • Prepare, proofread, and edit the County's financial reports;
  • Manage daily bank account activities, including initiating electronic deposits, transfers, and payments;
  • Prepare adjusting journal entries and review for cash balancing and coding discrepancies;
  • Assist other County departments and external agencies in reconciling general ledger transactions, banking, cash transactions, and other complex financial issues;
  • Compile annual compliance reports required for federal and state reporting;
  • Conduct annual physical inventory of County assets, maintaining and reconciling the asset management system, and preparing asset financial statements for the ACFR;
  • Perform additional administrative and financial duties to support the Treasurer's/Clerk and Recorder's Office and Finance Department as needed;
  • Support and uphold the mission of Lewis and Clark County and the Treasurer/Clerk and Recorder's office;
  • Act as a backup for Accounting Division staff and the Accounting Manager when necessary.
