The Opportunity

MassMutual is seeking a skilled Technical Underwriting Consultant to join the Office of the Corporate Chief Underwriter within the Expense, Analytics & Governance organization. As a key member of the Underwriting Governance team, you will demonstrate accountability, agility, and a dedication to being inclusive, while showcasing strong business acumen and the ability to advocate for projects or present challenges to the status quo.

The Team

This is a remote position, and candidates must be comfortable working from home. Self-motivation, discipline, and the ability to communicate and maintain working relationships via email, phone, and chat are essential.

The Impact

  • Demonstrate and continue to develop strong business acumen.
  • Develop a deep understanding of MassMutual's underwriting policies, guidelines, practices, and procedures, and be willing to champion changes to improve processes while maintaining mortality expectations.
  • Provide recommendations around new tools and methodologies for risk selection.
  • Analyze, create, and develop rules for algorithmic and accelerated underwriting processes.
  • Develop new and competitive underwriting guidelines with research, documentation, marketing, and presentations.
  • Think critically and problem-solve using data to drive toward resolution.
  • Interpret large sets of data and effectively communicate data trends.
  • Consult with stakeholders on core issues and watch list items.
  • Openly share knowledge, information, and feedback, collaborating to identify solutions and support team success.
  • Lean into new challenges as they arise, being comfortable with ambiguity.
  • Handle projects with a sense of urgency based on business prioritization.
  • Distill information into concise summaries and tools for diverse internal audiences.

Minimum Qualifications

  • HS diploma or GED
  • 8+ years of relevant work experience in Life Insurance Underwriting
  • Minimum $5+ million life approval limit without second signature

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Industry designations/education (FALU, FLMI, CLU) preferred
  • 10+ years of mastery-level knowledge of individual life insurance practices, underwriting standards, and operations
  • Confident communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to think strategically and influence others
  • Ability to partner with key constituents to support strategic and tactical development
  • Demonstrated track record of consistently meeting and/or exceeding performance expectations
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, driving business forward with latitude for independent decision-making
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau)
