North Star Academy, a part of Uncommon Schools, manages fourteen schools in Newark, NJ, serving students in grades K through 12. We believe in strong, authentic relationships between teachers and students, supported by effective school systems and an engaging instructional model.

The Role

This Performing Arts teacher will train communication skills through musical theatre. They will be responsible for implementing Uncommon Schools' performing arts curriculum and ensuring the success of its students. The performance-based program teaches during the school day and ensures students perform multiple times annually.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Uncommon Schools' Performing Arts musical theatre curriculum, which involves music, acting, and movement.
  • Direct and produce school productions annually, including Community Circle, Latinx & Hispanic Show, Black History Show, Spring Musical, and Moving Up Ceremony for every grade level.
  • Produce and oversee the school's Community Circle, assist around the school when not teaching if needed, share responsibility for grade-level and school-wide activities.
  • Commit to continual professional growth, participating actively in department meetings, faculty meetings, and other meetings if requested.
  • Participate in an annual three-week staff orientation and training in August.
  • Craft new performance content pieces with the PA team and Dean to add to shows, sharing across the program.
  • Support the creation of curriculum materials to be shared across the program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required with GPA 3 or higher.
  • Strong desire to teach in an Uncommon Schools setting.
  • Willingness to teach using Uncommon teaching methods.
  • Belief in and alignment with Uncommon Schools' core beliefs and educational philosophy is non-negotiable.

Compensation

Our compensation philosophy reflects our values of equity, transparency, and clarity. We offer best-in-class training, coaching, and support to develop and operate mission-driven schools. The starting salary for this role is approximately $65,000 per year, depending on relevant professional experience, education, certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools.
