Job Overview

Under the supervision of the Animal Control Coordinator and Shelter Director, the Animal Control Officer is tasked with the daily operations of animal control fieldwork and maintaining relevant records, along with providing animal care within the shelter as required. This role is supported by the Animal Control Coordinator and may involve collaboration with the Adoption Coordinator and Animal Care Coordinator.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. *Conducts all aspects of animal control fieldwork.
  2. *Investigates community complaints in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  3. *Responsible for the capture and impoundment of stray or dangerous animals.
  4. *Coordinates procedures for animal bite quarantines and rabies testing as necessary.
  5. *Facilitates communication between law enforcement and the shelter.
  6. *Maintains the cleanliness and operational condition of the animal control vehicle and equipment.
  7. *Communicates effectively in both verbal and written formats.
  8. *Handles animals humanely and in accordance with training.
  9. *Holds a valid Driver's License.
  10. *Promotes responsible pet ownership to the public.
  11. *Stays informed on national trends in animal shelter management and attends training sessions as needed.
  12. *May be required to testify in court regarding investigations.
  13. *Enforces local and state animal control laws and ordinances.
  14. *Manages the intake and setup of animals brought to the shelter.
  15. *Ensures accurate data entry into the computer system.
  16. *Assists shelter staff with cleaning and daily operations.
  17. *Conducts investigations related to animal control issues.
  18. *Participates in an on-call rotation for emergencies.
  19. *Completes necessary reports and maintains accurate records.
  20. *Removes deceased animals as required.
  21. *Assists in the treatment and euthanasia of shelter animals.
  22. *Performs additional duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  1. Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice, Animal Science, or a related field; or at least two years of experience in an Animal Control agency or similar organization.
  2. Specialized knowledge of animal control principles and law enforcement activities.
  3. Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  4. A friendly and approachable demeanor.
  5. Willingness to take on additional responsibilities as assigned.
