Financial Strategist for Renewable Energy

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join our executive team at Sunspear Energy, a leading solar energy company based in Honolulu, Hawaii. The CFO will play a critical role in driving the financial strategy of the company, with a specific focus on integrating a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system and overseeing project finance and solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Financial Strategy and Leadership:
    • Develop and implement financial strategies to support the company's growth and profitability.
    • Provide strategic financial guidance to the CEO and executive team.
    • Oversee all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Financial Modeling and Analysis:
    • Oversee the development and maintenance of sophisticated financial models to assess the valuation framework that supports Sunspear's investment and development strategies.
    • Assess the viability of projects, analyze cash flows, evaluate investment returns, and assess risks associated with project finance.
    • Conduct sensitivity analyses and scenario planning to support decision-making processes.
  • Capital Sourcing:
    • Identify and secure project financing from various sources, including construction lenders, debt providers (recourse & non-recourse), and tax equity partners.
    • Build and maintain relationships with financial institutions, investors, and other key stakeholders in the renewable energy finance sector.
  • Transaction Execution:
    • Lead the negotiation and structuring of project finance agreements, including equity investments, construction debt facilities, non-recourse debt arrangements, and tax equity transactions and tax credit transfer transactions.
    • Collaborate with legal and other internal teams to ensure contracts and agreements are aligned with Sunspear Energy's interests.
  • ERP System Integration:
    • Lead the integration of a new ERP system to streamline financial processes and improve data accuracy.
    • Collaborate with IT and other departments to ensure successful implementation and adoption of the ERP system.
    • Monitor and evaluate the performance of the ERP system, making adjustments as needed.
  • Project Finance and Solar PPA Development:
    • Manage project finance activities, including securing funding for solar projects and negotiating financial terms.
    • Oversee the development and execution of solar PPAs, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and optimizing financial returns.
    • Work closely with the project development team to assess financial viability and risks of new projects.
  • Cash Flow Management:
    • Oversee cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds as needed.
    • Manage the company's cash flow to maintain financial stability and support operational needs.
    • Develop strategies to optimize cash flow and reduce financial risks.
  • Accounting Team Senior Leadership:
    • Lead and manage the existing accounting team, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
    • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth within the accounting department.
    • Promote collaboration and effective communication within the finance team and across the organization.
  • Relationship Management:
    • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with financial institutions, investors, tax equity partners, and other relevant internal and external stakeholders.
    • Maintain open and transparent communication to ensure alignment on strategic initiatives, financial performance, and investment objectives.
  • Team Leadership:
    • Build and manage a high-performing project finance team, providing guidance, mentorship, and performance feedback.
    • Foster a collaborative and results-driven culture that encourages innovation, professional growth, and excellence.
  • Tracking, Monitoring, and Billing for Solar Assets:
    • Develop processes to oversee the tracking, monitoring, and billing processes for the company's fleet of solar assets.
    • Ensure accurate and timely billing for solar energy production and consumption.
    • Implement systems and processes to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of asset management.
  • Risk Management and Compliance:
    • Identify and mitigate financial risks to ensure the long-term stability of the company.
    • Ensure compliance with all financial regulations and standards.
    • Oversee internal audits and implement necessary controls to safeguard company assets.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; MBA or CPA preferred.
  • Proven experience as a CFO or in a senior financial leadership role, preferably in the renewable energy sector.
  • Strong knowledge of ERP systems and experience with ERP integration projects.
  • Expertise in project finance and solar PPA development.
  • Expertise with data analytics and statistical analysis.
  • Excellent analytical, strategic planning, and communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
