Job Summary:

This position is responsible for overseeing the Sterile Processing Department, ensuring that all surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment are properly inventoried, decontaminated, assembled, inspected, packaged, sterilized, stored, distributed, and tracked in a quality and timely manner throughout the hospital. The Sterile Processing Department Lead will train to perform these duties independently and without close supervision.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate and monitor sterilization equipment to ensure optimal performance and efficiency.
  • Prioritize daily tasks based on the interpretation of the surgical schedule, determining the requirement for instruments for each surgical case.
  • Disassemble carts and follow Universal Precautions for decontamination.
  • Sterilize, disinfect durable medical equipment and instruments, package clean supplies and instruments, maintain records for all instruments, and transport sterilized items to the floor.
  • Assemble sterilized instruments and recheck all instruments for cleanliness and/or impairment. Properly check power equipment.
  • Take measures to allow for easy instrument tracking, including following labeling processes, using an engraver, reporting, and documenting all missing instruments and implants replaced in trays.
  • Communicate the equipment and instrument inventory status with the Central Processing staff and Surgery Charge Nurse, including order status, back orders, and/or changes.
  • Respond to emergency situations by ensuring all emergency, trauma, and add-on cases are supplied properly and delivered to the Operating Room in a timely manner.
  • Perform the duties of shift supervisor in the absence of the Supervisor or on a specific project.
  • Utilize applications and technology to accurately facilitate record keeping in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
  • Provide on-the-job training (OJT) to newly hired associates in the department.
  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Healthcare, and abide by service behavior standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • May be required to work overtime based on business need.
  • May be required to float to other departments (within the scope of competency and qualifications) based on business need.
  • May be required to be placed on-call during a regularly scheduled shift.
Requirements:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 1+ years of experience in Sterile Processing.
Preferred:
  • Certified Registered Central Supply Technician (CRCST) or Certified Sterilization Processing Department Technician (CSPDT), or Certified Surgical Technician (CST) requirements.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong leadership abilities.
  • Regular attendance to perform work on site during regularly scheduled business hours or scheduled shifts is required.
  • Subject matter expert of cleaning, disinfection, and decontamination processes and sterilizers.
  • Subject matter expert in types and functions of instruments and equipment (e.g., endoscopic, microsurgical, robotic, and power).
  • Subject matter expert in the technology and software applications used to track, log, document instruments, durable medical equipment, repairs, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically within a multi-functional team.
  • Experience and understanding in the use of computers, as well as the ability to learn software relevant to Sterile Processing.
  • Ability to successfully function in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment.
  • Manual lifting frequency and duration equipment examples.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items.
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.
