Vast is seeking a Senior Audio & Acoustics Engineer to report directly to the Principal Human Systems Engineer. This role focuses on the advancement of audio and acoustic systems essential for the design and construction of human-rated space stations with artificial gravity. This is a full-time, exempt position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the planning, design, and execution of audio systems and acoustic management for space stations designed for crew habitation.
  • Model acoustic environments by collaborating with various teams to identify and mitigate harmful sound pressure levels and frequencies.
  • Choose speaker and microphone components that meet standards for audibility, intelligibility, reliability, and redundancy.
  • Evaluate and select audio codecs, amplifiers, and relevant filters.
  • Identify and qualify acoustic baffling components, materials, and configurations to ensure that ambient noise levels support mission success.
  • Collaborate with hardware and manufacturing engineers to create tailored, space-qualified solutions.
  • Ensure compliance of audio and acoustic systems with all relevant standards and requirements.
  • Guide external vendors in conducting tests and modifying transducers for specific applications.
  • Conduct sound analyses to guarantee appropriate sound levels and clarity in both standard and emergency situations.
  • Work closely with interdisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive system and component design, including avionics, power, structural, thermal, materials, and medical disciplines.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related engineering field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in audio and/or acoustic design.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Familiarity with digital signal processing, coding, and embedded systems.
  • Experience with I2S, lossless compression, and bandwidth-limited audio streaming.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment.
  • Capacity to make independent decisions with minimal information.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with colleagues and partner vendors.
  • Adaptability to work in a dynamic environment, managing multiple projects and adjusting to changes in strategic direction.
  • Experience with audio and acoustic systems in aviation, marine, or space applications.
  • Knowledge of lighting systems in aviation, marine, or space contexts.
  • Experience in audio and acoustic design for recording studios.

Compensation Range:

  • Senior Audio & Acoustics Engineer L3: $140,000 - $170,000
