We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Photo Editor to lead our Visual Storytelling team at ESPN. As a key member of our editorial team, you will be responsible for driving our live news coverage and journalism efforts, utilizing your expertise in photo editing, communication, and analytical data to visually impact breaking news stories.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead Live News Coverage: Collaborate with editorial and audience engagement teams to deliver high-quality visual content for live news coverage on ESPN and the ESPN app.
  • Supplement Existing Content: Utilize live sports photography and photo research to enhance existing ESPN content and content strategy.
  • Exercise Editorial Judgment: Make sound decisions under tight deadlines, drawing on extensive past experience and expertise in photo editing.
  • Communicate Effectively: Speak the language of story editors and sports fans, leveraging in-depth knowledge of current and trending major sports stories.
  • Identify Breaking News Stories: Identify valuable breaking news stories and enhance them visually, utilizing your expertise in photo editing and storytelling.
  • Lead a Room: Lead a team when needed, utilizing clear and direct verbal and written communication skills.
  • Problem-Solve: Independently problem-solve in real-time, utilizing your expertise in photo editing and storytelling.
  • Implement Editorial Standards: Understand and implement ESPN editorial standards and guidelines.
  • Track Story Performance: Track and report story performance metrics.
  • Manage Assignments: Manage several assignments at once, providing regular updates to inform the team.
  • Meet Deadlines: Meet multiple deadlines while maintaining high standards of accuracy and efficiency.
  • Coordinate Coverage: Coordinate coverage for content preparation, preview, and live event coverage.
  • Direct Visual Content: Direct and ensure consistent quality and style across all visual content produced by photo editors.
  • Hold Photo Editors Accountable: Hold photo editors accountable to workflow and documentation standards.
  • Negotiate Rights and Rates: Negotiate rights and rates, process and track invoices and payments.
  • Stay Up-to-Date: Keep up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies in sports photography, photo editing, and news/storytelling.
Requirements
  • Minimum of 7 Years of Experience: Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in journalism or a related field.
  • Live News Cycle Experience: Experience working in the live news cycle alongside editorial partners.
  • Copyright Knowledge: Understanding of copyright laws and photo licensing standards.
  • Photo Editing Skills: Fluent in Adobe Photoshop, Photo Mechanic, and other standard photo editing tools.
  • Digital Photography Skills: Proficient in general digital photography best practices.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Reliable Work Setup: Reliable work-from-home setup with reliable internet connection.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Expert-Level Knowledge: Expert-level knowledge of wire services, agencies, and non-traditional image sources.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational skills to set effective workflows and routines.
  • Content Management Skills: Well-versed in content management and project management systems.
  • Photo Software Knowledge: Intellectually curious about learning new photo software.
  • Journalistic Experience: Journalistic experience with writing, reporting, and research.
Education
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent: High School Diploma or Equivalent.
