Position Overview:
Newmark is seeking experienced Underwriters with a minimum of 3-5 years in commercial underwriting, specifically focused on GSE affordable loans. The primary role of the Underwriter involves conducting thorough financial, market, and underwriting assessments of affordable multifamily loans. This position presents a unique opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of multifamily mortgage underwriting, engage extensively with clients, and receive training under leading programs such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform detailed analysis and underwriting of complex multifamily real estate transactions in accordance with agency guidelines from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
- Conduct comprehensive economic and demographic research to evaluate the feasibility of various transactions.
- Prepare and deliver a detailed loan approval package to the credit committee.
- Foster and maintain strong relationships with origination and closing teams, as well as external agency investors.
- Execute thorough inspections of physical real estate assets as required.
Core Competencies:
- Exceptional analytical, research, and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and independent judgment, demonstrating initiative and precision.
- Proven capability to organize and prioritize multiple projects, ensuring timely completion.
- Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word.
- Demonstrated strong work ethic and proactive team collaboration, even in high-pressure situations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Real Estate, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of commercial underwriting experience with a focus on affordable loans, particularly GSE multifamily.
- Prior experience with DUS underwriting and familiarity with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Multifamily MAH/TAH Guides and affordable product types, including Preservation, LIHTC, Tax-Exempt Bonds, and Section 8.
- Willingness to travel 10-20% of the time.
Compensation:
The starting salary for this position is $90,000 annually, with potential for additional incentives. The actual salary will be determined based on various factors, including relevant skills, experience, and education. In addition to a competitive salary, the role includes a comprehensive benefits package and may offer discretionary bonuses and other forms of compensation.
Working Conditions:
This role is performed under normal working conditions, free from any disagreeable elements.
