Position Summary
The Lead Design Engineer plays a crucial role in managing the delivery of intricate projects that involve multi-disciplinary teams and sub-consultants across various locations. This position may serve as a national or regional technical authority within a specific discipline, ensuring effective project execution from inception to completion. The Lead Design Engineer acts as the primary liaison among internal teams, clients, and subconsultants, while also engaging in marketing and public meetings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee project delivery to ensure timelines, budgets, and client satisfaction are met, maintaining overall responsibility from concept to completion.
  • Make independent design decisions and assess their implications across the entire project.
  • Support the Project Manager or take on project management responsibilities, delegating tasks and monitoring progress of team members.
  • Lead and participate in meetings with clients, the public, and subconsultants throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Serve as the main contact for clients in the absence of the Project Manager.
  • Collaborate with client staff to address and resolve project-related issues.
  • Identify potential technical, scheduling, or financial challenges and work with the Project Manager and clients to develop solutions.
  • Engage in the pursuit of large, complex projects, contributing to scope and fee development, proposal preparation, and client interviews.
  • Create and maintain project work plans to track design progress.
  • Coordinate work among production staff across multiple disciplines and ensure effective collaboration with external subconsultants.
  • Ensure adherence to quality assurance processes and conduct checks on the accuracy of tasks completed by engineering and technical staff.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior staff to enhance the organization's expertise.
  • Participate in professional associations related to the field and present technical papers to elevate the company's profile.
  • Sign and seal engineering documents as an authorized representative of the firm.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in engineering is required.
  • Professional registration (P.E.) in relevant states is necessary or the ability to obtain it within six months of employment.
  • A minimum of eight years of design and engineering experience is required, with a proven ability to sign engineering documents.
  • Experience in planning, organizing, and overseeing complex projects is essential, along with experience leading diverse technical teams.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and design software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, or GeoPak is expected.
  • Prior experience in business development and project marketing is highly desirable.
  • Experience in innovative intersection planning and design, including roundabouts, is preferred.
