Position Overview Under the guidance of an attending physician, the Front Line Ordering Clinician (FLOC) Physician Assistant is tasked with the direct care and ongoing management of a patient population that aligns with their scope of practice and expertise.

This care is provided in designated inpatient and hospital-outpatient settings. The responsibilities of this role encompass clinical practice, consultation, professional growth, education, and research. The PAs in these positions may need to possess acute/critical care training. The necessary education will be determined by the specific requirements of the role in a given practice area.

The clinical aspects of this position will necessitate a heightened level of accountability, including the management of a cohort of high-acuity patients.

In addition to overseeing patient care, the FLOC PA may be called upon to perform invasive interventions and procedures to ensure physiological stability.

The role will also entail off-shift responsibilities.

The off-shift rotation schedule may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, determined by the clinical needs of the practice environment.

Key Responsibilities - Assess complex acute, critical, and chronically ill patients for urgent and emergent conditions.
- Utilize relevant data to evaluate for physiological instability and formulate a care plan.
- Execute therapeutic interventions to stabilize acute and critical health issues. Specific interventions are outlined in the Scope of Practice Document and approved as part of the credentialing/privileging process.
- Analyze the indications, contraindications, risks of complications, and cost-benefits of therapeutic interventions.
- Manage the care plan through evaluation, modification, and documentation based on the patient's response to therapy.
- Address changes in condition with a focus on optimizing patient outcomes.

- Integrate health promotion, protection, and injury prevention measures into the care plan within the context of complex acute, critical, and chronic illnesses.

- Facilitate patient transitions between and within healthcare settings.
- Serve as an educational resource to patients/families, nursing staff, and the provider team.
- Act as a consultant to multidisciplinary healthcare team members.
- Engage in scholarly activities, including research and education.
- Participate in personal professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs, and seeking relevant educational opportunities.
- Contribute to the professional development of others.

- Serve as a preceptor and mentor to support the growth of nurses, nurse practitioners, students, and other healthcare providers.

- Demonstrate a commitment to patient safety by addressing safety concerns and adapting practices to enhance safety. Report errors or potential errors through established systems. Exhibit shared accountability for safe practices.


Education Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Physician Assistant Required; Master's Degree in Physician Assistant Preferred.

Skills and Abilities - Ability to collaborate effectively in an inter-professional team setting with diverse responsibilities.

- Proficient in using computers and electronic medical records.

Computer Competency Basic proficiency in computer use (mouse, keyboard, printer, USB ports). Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and communication tools). Internet browsing, intranet searching, and document access. Use of shared network file space. Basic familiarity with patient-facing technology (e.g., IV pumps, point-of-care devices, CR monitors). Navigation and use of clinical communication systems.

Information Literacy - Identify the nature and extent of clinical information needed and utilize appropriate technology to access it. Efficiently and effectively access necessary information. Critically evaluate information and its sources, integrating it appropriately into clinical practice. Assess outcomes from the use of information. Information Management Literacy - Navigate the electronic health record system. Locate and review specific patient data across various clinical information systems. Effectively utilize clinical decision support tools. Understand policies and procedures, confidentiality, security, and privacy regulations concerning clinical information systems. Collect clinical data using quality improvement tools.
