San Jose, California, United States Cisco Full time
About Us

We are the Mechanical and Thermal team within the Service Provider division, dedicated to the innovative design of high-performance routers, specifically the Cisco 8000 series.

This series leverages Cisco's groundbreaking Silicon One ASIC technology, which offers unparalleled performance and density, along with a rich array of features.

Our mission is to revolutionize the industry and establish a new internet infrastructure tailored for AI networks and the 5G era, creating a unified, programmable silicon architecture that serves as the cornerstone for all future Cisco routing products.

Our devices are engineered for universal adaptability across various service providers and web-scale markets, ensuring high-speed performance without compromising on programmability, buffering, power efficiency, scalability, or feature flexibility.

Your Role
In this position, you will engage with the platform engineering mechanical team. Your responsibilities will encompass the design and development of both current and next-generation mechanical systems for telecommunications. We seek individuals who thrive in dynamic environments and are eager to contribute to a dedicated team where open communication, empowerment, innovation, collaboration, and customer success are paramount.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Architect and design next-generation chassis and circuit cards that fulfill system product specifications.
  • Conduct detailed 2D tolerance analysis for intricate electro-mechanical assemblies utilizing spreadsheets or advanced 3D tolerance analysis tools.
  • Innovate mechanical solutions using materials such as sheet metal, plastic, and die-cast that comply with EMI, safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Create 3D CAD models using industry-standard software.
  • Generate comprehensive drawings applying Geometric Tolerancing and Dimensioning (GD&T) principles.
  • Lead the resolution of design challenges by collaborating closely with manufacturing teams and suppliers, developing effective mitigation strategies, and keeping stakeholders informed.
  • Work alongside cross-functional teams to negotiate requirements and assess technical risks and trade-offs.
  • Collaborate with thermal engineers to devise and implement effective cooling solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.

Collaboration
You will work closely with the Mechanical/Thermal group, a team built on innovation, teamwork, and open communication. Your role will also involve cross-functional collaboration with Hardware Engineering, Product Management, Operations, Global Supplier Management, and external vendors.

Who You Are
You are a technically adept and creative individual with a strong mechanical aptitude, excelling in problem-solving and embracing complex challenges. As a technical leader, you possess a passion for design and innovation, demonstrating the ability to work independently and transform strategic visions into tangible outcomes.

The ideal candidate will exhibit excellent communication skills, a robust analytical mindset, and a collaborative spirit that prioritizes listening, compromise, and teamwork to uncover optimal product solutions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in 3D MCAD tools.
  • Experience in designing sheet metal for high-volume production.
  • Familiarity with GD&T and tolerance analysis.
  • A proven track record of leading teams and delivering complex projects.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with at least 8 years of experience in electronic enclosure design.
  • Relevant experience in mechanical design for data center computing or networking equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing tooling for various materials.
  • Experience in designing plastic and die-cast components.
  • Experience in mechanism design and performing static and dynamic analysis.
  • Expertise in tolerance analysis and statistical methods.
  • Familiarity with engineering change orders, bill of materials, and deviation processes.
  • Experience with Model-Based Definition (MBD).

This role requires a commitment to onsite collaboration.
