We are seeking a Legal Counsel Specialist to become a vital part of our Corporate Legal team. This position will deliver legal insights and advice to the trade association, its subsidiaries, and affiliates across various subjects, including contracts, insurance, employment law, political advocacy, intellectual property, and general business matters. Additionally, this role will collaborate with external legal counsel on litigation matters as necessary. The Legal Counsel Specialist will also be responsible for drafting a significant volume of contracts (including licensing, vendor, and partnership agreements for one of our subsidiaries), educational resources, and other documentation.

Position Title: Legal Counsel Specialist
Reports To: Assistant General Counsel
Department: Corporate Legal
Compensation Range: $112,000 to $125,000 Annually
FLSA Status: Exempt

Key Responsibilities:

  • Negotiate, draft, and review a variety of legal agreements.
  • Provide legal advice and counsel on a broad array of topics, including insurance, employment law, political advocacy, intellectual property, and general business matters (note that some of this will overlap with contract work).
  • Stay informed about legal developments impacting trade associations, including antitrust law, insurance, employment law, intellectual property, and other relevant areas.
  • Collaborate with external legal counsel on litigation issues.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda as required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Active member of the California State Bar.
  • 5+ years of experience in a law firm or equivalent in-house experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in insurance matters, employment law, antitrust law, political issues, and/or intellectual property (copyright and trademark).
  • Litigation experience.

  • Comfortable with technology, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Westlaw, and internet research.

Travel Requirements

  • Limited travel within California may be necessary.
