Job Overview

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Lutheran Social Services of New York - Safe Haven is dedicated to providing a nurturing environment for unaccompanied children (UCs) in immigration custody. The Bilingual Educational Support Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting the Lead Educator in delivering a foundational educational curriculum to the youth in our care, including introductory English language instruction.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure effective supervision of students during educational hours, maintaining appropriate teacher-student ratios.
  • Support the classroom educator in the preparation, execution, assessment, and documentation of daily lesson plans as directed.
  • Identify and report any signs of emotional distress, abuse, or neglect in students to the educator, assigned Clinician, and/or Case Manager.
  • Actively assist the educator in managing student behavior, intervening as necessary to maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Track and document each student's progress in the program database.
  • Assist with administrative tasks, including the collection and correction of homework, progress reporting, and incident documentation.
  • Facilitate classroom instruction, stepping in to deliver lessons as assigned by the educator.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 3 years of experience as a Teaching Assistant, or
  • Bachelor's degree in Education or a related behavioral science field.

EXPERIENCE:

At least 1 year of experience in a foster care agency or a related human services organization.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with the classroom educator and other staff members.
  • Competence in supervising students in an educational setting, including those with behavioral challenges.
  • Capability to implement the instructional program as outlined by the classroom educator.
  • Strong commitment to working with immigrant youth.
  • Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development.
  • Ability to be an active and engaged participant in the classroom environment.
