Job Summary

The Medical Support Specialist is responsible for determining donor eligibility, managing donor adverse events, and reviewing laboratory test results. This role requires strong communication and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Donor Eligibility (85%)
  • Determine donor eligibility accurately and in a timely manner, including proper management of informed consent, AIDS education, and confidential self-exclusion.
  • Evaluate and manage donor reaction(s) at the facility, following applicable SOPs.
  • Manage donor deferral, reviewing test results and notifying donors of unsuitable test results.
  • Initiate and investigate Post Donation Information (PDI).
  • Refer to the Center Physician or Medical Affairs when needed for guidance on medical or technical issues.
  • Demonstrate continued competency in job responsibilities and complete periodic assessments with the Center Physician.

Additional Responsibilities (5%)

  • Conduct pre-placement evaluations of new hires, including assessment of medical history questionnaires.
  • Support the Hepatitis B and Seasonal Flu vaccination programs for employees.
  • Maintain employee medical records.
  • Member of the EHS site committee and assist in training employees.
  • Manage employee incidents and determine whether further evaluation is required.

Requirements

  • Currently licensed or certified in the state where duties will be assigned: Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse (LPN or LVN).
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and AED certification required.
  • Fulfillment of state requirements for basic IV therapy.
  • Able to satisfactorily complete FDA-approved training requirements for BioLife Medical Support Specialist.
  • Minimum of two years in a clinical or hospital setting preferred.
