Currently, we are seeking a Student Intern in Environmental Laboratory - Microbiology.

Under close supervision, the selected candidate will engage in various tasks within the Laboratory, focusing on General Chemistry, Microbiology, and Sampling sections.

Key responsibilities will include supporting our microbiology monitoring program, where water samples from various sources are processed and analyzed using both culture-based and molecular techniques for detecting fecal indicator bacteria and pathogens. Specific tasks may involve:
  • Assisting with membrane filtration and plate incubation.
  • Collecting and documenting QA/QC data.
  • Cleaning laboratory glassware and preparing reagents.
  • Receiving and logging samples for analysis.
  • Conducting analyses of environmental samples, including water and shellfish tissues.
  • Performing data compilation and analysis.
Additional responsibilities may include sample preservation, reagent preparation, and general laboratory maintenance.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to work with environmental samples, communicate effectively, and adhere to safety protocols.
Qualifications & Requirements
Required:
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Full-time college student at least at the junior level in a relevant degree program.
  3. Valid California Class C Driver's License.
Desired:
The preferred candidate will possess:
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Experience with molecular laboratory techniques, including DNA/RNA extraction and PCR.
  • Completion of coursework in molecular microbiology or related fields.
Eligibility:
  • Must be enrolled full-time and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Must have at least one year of academic study remaining.
  • Verification of enrollment is required prior to employment.
  • Applicants must provide a letter of recommendation.
Work Schedule:
This internship requires a minimum of 15 hours of on-site work each week, with flexibility during exam periods.
Compensation:
Undergraduate Student: $21.00/Hour
Graduate Student: $24.00/Hour
Physical Demands:
Must be able to work in a standard office or laboratory setting, with the ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
Environmental Elements:
Work is conducted in a controlled environment with moderate noise levels.
