Job Title: Shelter Veterinarian

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Shelter Veterinarian to join our team at the City of Springfield, Massachusetts. As a key member of our animal care team, you will be responsible for providing high-quality veterinary care to animals in our shelter.

Job Summary:

The Shelter Veterinarian will be responsible for examining, diagnosing, and treating animals in our care. This includes performing routine and emergency medical procedures, vaccinating animals, and maintaining accurate medical records. The successful candidate will also be responsible for developing and implementing shelter medicine protocols, working with law enforcement on cases of animal cruelty, and providing consultation to staff on euthanasia decisions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Examine, diagnose, and treat animals in our care
  • Perform routine and emergency medical procedures, including vaccinations and surgeries
  • Maintain accurate medical records and reports
  • Develop and implement shelter medicine protocols
  • Work with law enforcement on cases of animal cruelty
  • Provide consultation to staff on euthanasia decisions
  • Oversee drug and medical supplies inventory
  • Establish and maintain relationships with community and relief veterinarians
  • Train staff on medical procedures and protocols
Requirements:
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree
  • Two (2) years of experience working in a shelter environment
  • Current Massachusetts Veterinary License in good standing
  • Ability to maintain mal-practice insurance
