Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Shelter Veterinarian to join our team at the Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center. As a key member of our veterinary team, you will provide high-quality medical care to animals in our shelter, develop and implement shelter medicine protocols, and work closely with law enforcement and the District Attorney on cases of animal cruelty.

Key Responsibilities
  • Examine, diagnose, and treat animals in our care, including routine and emergency medical procedures
  • Vaccinate animals against common diseases and maintain accurate medical records
  • Perform surgical sterilizations, emergency surgeries, and dental procedures
  • Provide consultation and guidance to staff on animal care and welfare
  • Oversee the inventory of medical supplies and ensure compliance with DEA regulations
  • Establish and maintain relationships with community veterinarians and provide training to staff on medical procedures
  • Work closely with the animal care team to prevent and control disease in the shelter population
  • Report suspected animal cruelty and prepare reports for law enforcement and the District Attorney
Requirements
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree
  • Two years of experience working in a shelter environment
  • Current Massachusetts Veterinary License in good standing
  • Ability to maintain malpractice insurance
