Position Overview: The Chief Legal Officer will oversee all legal operations of GMAC and its affiliated entities, providing strategic guidance and oversight on a variety of legal issues, including corporate compliance, data privacy, intellectual property, contractual agreements, labor relations, and risk management. This role acts as the principal legal advisor to GMAC's Senior Leadership Team, including the Chief Executive Officer.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the legal department, including staff and external legal counsel, to support GMAC's global legal needs across various domains such as compliance, data privacy, intellectual property, and risk management.
  • Act as the Chief Privacy Officer, ensuring adherence to data protection regulations and overseeing compliance programs.
  • Collaborate with GMAC's business units to facilitate the implementation of organizational strategies while ensuring compliance with applicable laws.
  • Direct enterprise legal initiatives in key areas, including privacy, risk management, and corporate structure.
  • Provide expert counsel on test security and accommodations, coordinating with relevant teams to manage risks effectively.
  • Supervise a team responsible for contracts, data protection, compliance policies, and intellectual property matters.
  • Deliver legal advice on investigations, complaints, and litigation across various issues, including employment law and customer relations.
  • Proactively understand GMAC's business operations and provide legal insights to mitigate risks while achieving business goals.
  • Enhance and implement organizational policies and procedures to improve operational efficiency.
  • Manage the legal department's budget effectively.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school; licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • A minimum of 10 years of legal experience, with at least 2 years in an in-house counsel role.
  • Extensive experience in providing legal guidance on compliance and data privacy matters within a corporate setting.
  • Progressive supervisory experience, fostering the development of a high-performing legal team.
  • Familiarity with laws relevant to non-profit organizations, corporate transactions, and international compliance.
  • Strong problem-solving skills for unique legal challenges.
  • Proficient in legal analysis and translating legislation into compliance frameworks.
  • Exceptional negotiation, drafting, and communication skills.
  • Ability to evaluate risks and make informed decisions.
  • Experience managing sensitive information with discretion.
  • Professional demeanor with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Strong project management capabilities.
  • Comfortable in a diverse, multicultural environment.
  • Willingness to travel as needed and adapt to a hybrid work model.
