Position Overview

Job Title: Fiber Optics Installation Specialist

Location: Chesapeake, VA

Role Summary

This position necessitates a foundational understanding of photonics principles and fiber optic technology for both shipboard and land-based installations. Candidates should be familiar with the tools required for fiber optic installation and connectorization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Execute basic fiber optic tasks under direct supervision or following detailed guidelines.
  • Identify, install, and remove fiber optic interconnection box (FOICB) components using standard hand tools.
  • Construct fiber optic connectors, including ST, SC, and LC types.
  • Prepare for the installation of blown optical fiber (BOF).
  • Assist in testing fiber optic cables and connectors with common instruments such as Visual Fault Locators (VFLs), DB loss meters, and Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs).
  • Collaborate with a cable crew to adhere to standard installation and routing protocols.
  • Undertake additional tasks as directed by management to support the organization's objectives.
  • Willingness to travel outside the local area as needed.
  • Availability for overtime, including weekends, as required.
Qualifications
  • Completion of the NAVSEA Fiberoptic Core Module is mandatory.
  • Completion of the NAVSEA BOF Methods and Components Module is required.
  • Completion of the NAVSEA Cable Handling, Penetration, and Repair/Modification Module is necessary.
  • Completion of the NAVSEA FOICB/TRB Forming, Routing, and Shaping Module is essential.
  • Completion of the NAVSEA Single Ferrule Module is required.
  • Completion of the NAVSEA Cable Puller Module is necessary.
  • Possession of a valid OSHA 10 Maritime Card is required.
  • A High School Diploma or GED equivalent may be necessary based on contract requirements.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in an approved electronic/electrical apprenticeship program, or equivalent military technical training, or two years of relevant shipboard installation experience is required.
  • A valid State Driver's License is mandatory.
Additional Skills
  • Familiarity with NAVSEA drawings and the ability to navigate shipboard environments.
  • Understanding of company safety protocols and the capability to maintain connector assembly tracking records.
Security Clearance

Applicants may need to obtain clearance up to the secret level.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to access various shipboard locations, including restricted areas.
  • Occasional lifting or moving of equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Work may involve physical activities such as climbing, walking, and stooping.
  • Outdoor work may be required, exposing candidates to temperature variations and noise.
