Position Title

Research Scientist in Optical and Spectroscopy

  • Location: Adelphi, Maryland
  • Security Clearance: Active Clearance or Eligible to Obtain - U.S. citizenship required
  • Salary: $115,000 - $135,000 Based on Experience and Education
  • Travel Requirements: 10%

Role Summary

SURVICE Engineering is actively seeking a Research Scientist in Optical and Spectroscopy to join our Aberdeen Research Operation. This role offers a unique opportunity to advance your career while contributing to significant projects within the defense sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and establish optical and spectroscopy techniques for analyzing various micro-organism outputs, including bioluminescence.
  • Design and refine experimental protocols and conduct tests to assess micro-organism expression performance.
  • Execute experiments to facilitate biotechnology workflows in optical and spectroscopy data acquisition.
  • Analyze extensive data sets collected during experiments.
  • Collaborate with internal experts to achieve project goals.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations and written reports summarizing research findings.
  • Engage with government agencies, academic institutions, industry partners, and facility personnel to fulfill complex research and development objectives.
  • Conduct laboratory and potential fieldwork to develop and set up spectroscopy and optical systems for characterizing micro-organism outputs.
  • Optimize experimental data collection protocols.
  • Handle various micro-organisms, including bacteria, yeast, and fungi.
  • Assist in the analysis and interpretation of collected data.
  • Contribute to an interdisciplinary team focused on developing field-ready capabilities.
  • Manage timelines and direct work to meet project deadlines.
  • Adhere to policies regarding record-keeping and data distribution limits.
  • Prepare and present documentation in compliance with government standards for approval processes.
  • Present findings to staff, universities, private companies, research institutes, and government research centers as requested.
  • Participate in technical and programmatic meetings, both virtually and in person.
  • Occasional travel to other laboratory sites and for field testing may be required.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Chemistry, or Engineering with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience is required. Exceptional candidates with less experience may be considered. Candidates need not meet all qualifications; if you possess some of the desired skills, we encourage you to apply.

  • Experience in setting up analytical instruments for experimental analysis, particularly in spectroscopy and optical signal processing.
  • Strong analytical skills with a background in processing quantitative data sets.
  • Proven ability to document experimental and analytical procedures, methods, results, and conclusions.
  • U.S. citizenship with a SECRET security clearance or willingness to obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance.
