General Overview
As a Student Safety Monitor, your primary responsibility will be to ensure the safety of children as they navigate their way to and from educational institutions. If you are a reliable individual who enjoys working outdoors and interacting with children, this role may be ideal for you. Experience the fulfillment of contributing to the safety and well-being of young students while working in an outdoor environment. This position involves routine outdoor duties performed on a scheduled basis, with varied shifts across different locations within the City of Madison. Key responsibilities include overseeing the safety of children at street crossings. You will work under the guidance of a Supervisor, adhering to the protocols established by the Traffic Engineering Division.
VACANCIES:
Currently, there are 7 openings available.
HOURS:
Approximately hours per week, depending on the assigned location. Typical shift hours are from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 2:15 PM to 4:30 PM, with an earlier afternoon shift on Mondays. All positions operate five days a week, Monday through Friday, during the academic year, with breaks during school holidays.

APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL THE CLOSING DATE, HOWEVER THE SELECTION PROCESS WILL BEGIN PRIOR TO THE CLOSING DATE.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
- Identify and signal safe gaps in traffic using a hand-held stop sign to facilitate safe crossings for children.
- Engage positively with children, directing and guiding them safely across the street.
- Place orange safety cones in the street near controlled crossings multiple times daily to alert traffic to school zones.
- On-Call/Substitute monitors will provide relief to regularly assigned monitors at busy crossings or work independently as needed.
- Report any issues, hazards, or incidents to the immediate supervisor and school officials.
- Complete necessary forms such as failure to yield, student count sheets, and workers' compensation reports as required.
- Introduce oneself to the school community related to the assigned crossing and educate students about safety procedures.
- Participate in initial orientation and on-the-job training for new hires, and attend annual training seminars.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Experience in guiding and supervising children, which may include volunteer roles, coaching, tutoring, or parenting responsibilities.
- Depending on the number of applications, random selection may be used to determine interview candidates.
Special Requirements
Ability to meet the transportation requirements of the position.
Physical Requirements:
- Employees are expected to work at busy intersections to manage traffic during school hours.
- Work involves being outdoors in all weather conditions whenever school is in session.
- Employees must have the physical ability to control and stop traffic using cones and a hand-held stop sign.
- Employees must be able to walk across intersections while holding a stop sign above their head.
- Employees must be able to lift and place traffic cones weighing 7-10 pounds and hold the stop sign above their head for varying durations.
- Employees must remain alert and be able to see and hear traffic to guide children safely across the street.
Hourly employees may be eligible for sick leave and other benefits based on hours worked.
